A provincial restaurant becomes a national chain
Sia grew up in Iloilo and began experimenting with small businesses before completing university. In 2003 he opened the first Mang Inasal, combining charcoal-grilled chicken, rice and a service model designed for a broad provincial mass market.
Franchising began in 2005 and accelerated the chain’s national growth. In 2010, Jollibee Foods Corporation acquired a 70 percent stake; it later bought the remainder. The transaction gave Mang Inasal access to a larger operating system and gave Sia the resources for a second business career.
DoubleDragon and the second venture
Sia partnered with Jollibee founder Tony Tan Caktiong and their families in 2012 to build DoubleDragon. The company listed in 2014 and developed community malls, offices, industrial warehouses and hotels, seeking recurring rental income rather than another restaurant format.
