Why this life matters

His career illustrates the move from shaping purchased metal into products to organising energy-intensive primary production and its supply relationships.

Timeline

Key moments

  1. Engineering and enterprise

Graduated from Oklahoma and became a founding member of Press Metal.

  2. Chief executive and listing

The report dates group CEO service from 1993; the earlier company listed that year.

  3. Main Board transfer

The Edge records transfer from the Second Board.

  4. Mukah smelting

Press Metal moved upstream into aluminium production in Sarawak.

  5. Holding-company reorganisation

Appointed CEO of the new listed holding company on 4 July.

  6. A broader emissions target

The report added upstream Scope 3 to its climate targets.

Five brothers and a new industrial business

Koon Poh Keong graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering in 1986. That year he became one of Press Metal’s founding members. The company’s 2024 report dates the earlier enterprise’s inception to 13 May 1986. The Edge’s 2019 account names four brothers who built it with him: Poh Ming, Poh Weng, Poh Tat and Poh Kong. Their contribution belongs in the history alongside his own.

The initial business was aluminium extrusion in Puchong, Selangor. Extrusion shapes metal into useful profiles; the later decision to make primary aluminium was a different industrial undertaking. The early company’s small workforce and hands-on family management, as described by The Edge, were the starting organisation from which larger operations developed.

Listing and a move upstream

Press Metal listed on the Kuala Lumpur exchange’s Second Board in 1993 and transferred to the Main Board in 1999. The corporate profile also dates Koon’s group chief-executive service from 1993. These changes created a longer-lived public reporting structure around a business that had begun with a small manufacturing operation.

The decisive upstream move came with the Mukah smelting plant in Sarawak in 2009. Smelting brought the enterprise into primary metal production rather than only the shaping of purchased aluminium. It also made dependable electricity supply central to expansion. The Edge’s dated account describes long-term power-purchase agreements with Sarawak Energy and subsequent Samalaju development. These were relationships with an external power supplier, not evidence that the founder personally created Sarawak’s energy resources.

A new listed holding company

On 4 July 2017 Koon was appointed group chief executive of Press Metal Aluminium Holdings ahead of that company’s assumption of the earlier company’s listing status on 10 July. The reorganisation explains why a director profile can contain both a 1993 service date and a 2017 appointment. They describe different points in the enterprise’s corporate history rather than contradictory beginnings.

The 2024 report names his brothers’ continuing roles and distinguishes the board chairman from executive management. His significance is therefore best understood as part of a family industrial and management network. Engineering, production, commercial relationships and governance were distributed across people and organisations even while he remained a prominent executive figure.

Energy advantages and the remaining environmental task

Press Metal’s 2024 report says its Sarawak smelters obtain electricity predominantly from hydroelectric sources through long-term agreements. That is important to the company’s account of its operating model, but electricity is only one part of an aluminium footprint. The same report identifies direct operating improvements and alumina supply as an upstream emissions hotspot. It also records a change from a carbon-neutrality ambition to a 2050 net-zero target that includes selected upstream categories.

These are the issuer’s dated disclosures and plans, not independently established completion of every target. The distinction gives a more useful account of Koon’s later career than a wealth ranking: the business had to coordinate power, raw materials, smelting processes, customers and environmental reporting at an industrial scale far beyond its original extrusion workshop.
