Philosophy studies and entry into GMA
Gilberto Duavit Jr. holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of the Philippines. He joined GMA Network in January 1999 as a board director and executive-committee member. His later operating responsibilities developed from that entry rather than from founding the broadcaster.
He is distinct from his father, Gilberto M. Duavit Sr., named in the history of GMA’s ownership group. The company’s current management biography and succession announcement separate the younger executive’s career from that earlier generation. A family connection therefore does not make the two men’s positions or career dates interchangeable.
From executive committee to operating leadership
Duavit became executive-committee chairman in August 2000 and executive vice-president and chief operating officer in November 2000. He became president and COO in 2010. In particular, 1999 marks his entry into the board, not the beginning of his COO appointment.
His work extended into associated media companies, with responsibilities listed at GMA Network Films, GMA Holdings, GMA Productions and GMA New Media. The current filing also records a vice-chairmanship at GMA Ventures. These entities cover different parts of the group’s business, and a list of board roles is not evidence that every company has the same operating management.
The 2024 succession and changing audiences
Felipe Gozon announced Duavit as the next CEO on 9 December 2023, with the appointment taking effect on 1 January 2024. Gozon remained chairman and adviser, while Joel Marcelo Jimenez became executive-committee chairman. Duavit’s CEO role was therefore one part of a wider leadership transition.
At the 21 May 2025 shareholders’ meeting, Duavit discussed refreshing television programming, responding to digital viewing, improving online engagement and monetisation, and developing film and content-distribution revenues. These were company-reported priorities and assessments, not independent proof of personal success. The current management record and 2026 filing continue to identify him as president and CEO.
Foundation work and election coverage
Duavit is president and trustee of GMA Kapuso Foundation, whose stated programmes include emergency relief, health and nutrition, medical assistance and education. The foundation separately identifies Gozon as chairman. Keeping those offices distinct makes the governance of its charitable work clearer than a general description of every senior executive as its head.
In November 2024, Duavit also participated in the launch of GMA’s election-coverage partnership for the 2025 polls, emphasising access to timely information. That public statement describes a stated broadcasting responsibility; it is not, on its own, independent evidence about the impartiality or effectiveness of all subsequent coverage.
