Andrew L. Tan’s family background links China and the Philippines. An Emperador-hosted feature identifies his birthplace as Quanzhou and describes his upbringing in an immigrant family. A University of the East report supplies a firmer educational milestone: a BS in Business Administration, completed magna cum laude in 1974.
His birth year is not stated here because the checked records conflict. Alliance Global’s 2026 disclosure gives an age inconsistent with the widely repeated 1952 date. That discrepancy does not prevent a useful account of his documented education and companies, but it does prevent presenting an exact birthday as settled.
Megaworld and the integrated township model
Tan founded Megaworld in 1989, and the company listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange on 15 June 1994. Property development became a central part of his business career, particularly projects combining residential buildings, offices, retail and other services within planned communities.

Alliance Global has a different corporate chronology: incorporation on 12 October 1993, commercial operations beginning in 1994 and a stock-exchange listing in 1999. Its early glass-container manufacturing activity preceded expansion as a holding company. Calling all of these milestones Megaworld’s 1989 founding would collapse separate enterprises into one.
The group’s history dates the Emperador brandy launch to 1990. Its later international expansion included Whyte and Mackay in 2014 and Bodegas Fundador in 2016, followed by Emperador’s secondary Singapore listing in 2022. The brand launch is not automatically the incorporation date of each subsequent company bearing the Emperador name.
