Banking experience before NCB

Dermot Desmond was born in Cork in 1950 and moved with his family to Dublin in 1956. Trinity’s biography records schooling in Marino and New Ross, followed by work at Citibank, the Investment Bank of Ireland and banking consultancy for Price Waterhouse Coopers in Afghanistan.

His route into entrepreneurship thus began within financial institutions and advisory work, before the creation of his own firm.

Building and selling a financial business

He founded NCB, a stockbroking business, in 1981 and sold it to National Westminster Bank in 1994. Trinity also dates the founding of International Investment and Underwriting, or IIU, to 1995.

Celtic’s 2008 account describes software companies serving financial services and investments including London City Airport, Sandy Lane, Betdaq and Barchester Healthcare.

Founding, selling and investing are different forms of involvement. Listing an investment does not establish that he alone operated its underlying business.

A long association with Celtic

Celtic’s 2025 AGM notice records Desmond as a non-executive director since May 1995 and as IIU’s chairman and founder. Its resolution sought his annual re-election; that notice is a proposal, not the subsequent voting result.

The same notice contains shareholder criticism of lengthy board tenures and a separate board response defending its evaluation procedures.

Reading both voices preserves the difference between an investor’s experience and the governance questions surrounding a long appointment.

Institutional recognition

UCD conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws on Desmond on 23 November 2007 and presented its Ulysses Medal. Its account associated the awards with business innovation and his role in promoting Dublin’s International Financial Services Centre.

This is the university’s stated rationale for recognition, rather than a measurement of the whole centre’s economic effects. His career is best understood through the businesses, transactions and board relationships that can be dated, rather than estimates of personal wealth.
