Learning inside a family retailer
Margaret Heffernan was born in Cork in 1942. Her father, Ben Dunne, opened his first shop there in 1944. She left school at fourteen to work in the family business. Michael Murphy’s 2007 honorary-degree address particularly associated her influence with textiles and the development of its clothing offer.

Leadership and the supplier relationship
The same address describes her sharing leadership with her brother Frank from the early 1990s.
A different perspective comes from Michelle Mone’s 2018 conference account, reported by The Irish Times. Mone recalled approaching Heffernan while building Ultimo and receiving a listing at Dunnes Stores. She credited that decision with helping the supplier’s growth.
This is evidence about access to retail distribution, not proof that Heffernan founded or owned the supplier. It makes a buyer’s selection decision visible within a career often described through the shop chain alone.
A business with multiple voices
A January 2018 report of the UK subsidiary’s filed accounts identified Heffernan and Francis Dunne as directors, and recorded Anne Heffernan and Sharon McMahon joining that board in August 2017.
In March 2018, Mandate addressed Heffernan as a Dunnes director in an open letter alleging limited formal engagement and criticising union-subscription arrangements.
The union’s position is a participant claim, not a judicial finding. Together, these records locate retail leadership within a family-company structure and an employment relationship; they do not establish a present-day job title.
Philanthropy and recognition
The 2007 citation also records her founding the People in Need Trust in May 1988 and supporting medical education and research. It describes a donation enabling a former chapel at UCD’s Smurfit campus to become a research library. NUI awarded her an honorary LLD that September.
Her public record therefore includes institution-building outside retail, alongside the commercial decisions for which she became known. The citation’s praise remains the speaker’s assessment.
