Kedah, broadcasting and collected voices
Chong Keat Aun was born in Malaysia in 1978 and comes from Kedah. His career developed across broadcasting, performance and filmmaking. Before his feature breakthrough, he worked in roles including film editing, documentary directing, journalism and radio presenting. This background placed listening, research and the handling of other people's accounts alongside visual storytelling.
His cultural conservation work collected Chinese dialects through poems, opera, folk songs and interviews with elders. These recordings preserved forms of expression that can disappear as speakers grow older. They also help explain his later approach to cinema: local voices and inherited stories provide the material from which larger histories emerge.
A debut rooted in belief
The Story of Southern Islet, his first feature, appeared in 2020. Drawing on childhood memories of his parents, it follows a wife seeking help after her husband develops a frightening illness. Her search crosses the spiritual practices of communities near the MalaysiaโThailand border, making belief part of the characters' everyday attempts to survive.
At the 2020 Golden Horse Awards, Chong won Best New Director. The film separately received the FIPRESCI and NETPAC prizes. The critics' jury praised its engagement with Malaysia's different cultures and religions. Its reception brought international attention to a debut whose landscape and supernatural traditions were grounded in a particular home community.
Snow in Midsummer and remembered violence
Snow in Midsummer entered the Giornate degli Autori competition in Venice in 2023. Its story links the violence in Kuala Lumpur on 13 May 1969 with an encounter in a cemetery in 2018. Chinese opera connects its two periods, carrying a history of separation and mourning through the lives of its characters.
Chong traced the project to testimony from a social worker and his discovery of a cemetery associated with victims of the violence. He returned to record relatives' accounts during commemorations. His director's statement describes combining oral recordings with historical materials, giving the film a foundation in sustained encounters with people preserving their families' memories.

Women, care and a return to the border
Pavane for an Infant had its world premiere in Tokyo's Asian Future section on 30 October 2024. Centred on a Kuala Lumpur baby hatch and its staff, it examines women's experiences of abandonment, abuse and care. Chong said a classmate's volunteering stories, first shared in 2016, helped prompt the film.
Mother Bhumi followed in 2025, returning to a farming community near the Thai border through a widow who also practises healing rituals. Chong's contribution extended into music: he wrote the lyrics of Bhujanga, which shared the 2025 Golden Horse award for Best Original Film Song with Penny Tai, its composer and performer.
