A Jakarta childhood and an Indonesian rock career
Anggun Cipta Sasmi was born in Jakarta on 29 April 1974. Her father, Darto Singo, was a singer and producer, and music was part of her childhood rather than a later career discovery. Universal Music France says she began singing at nine. She recorded as a child before developing the rock repertoire that made her known to Indonesian listeners in her teens.
That early recording history needs a distinction. The 1986 Dunia Aku Punya was a rock studio album, not simply her first encounter with a recording studio. Her 1989 single Mimpi marked a more visible Indonesian breakthrough. Leaving Indonesia and building a second career
In 1994 Anggun left Indonesia to pursue a career beyond its recording market. She spent time in London before settling into work in France, where she collaborated with producer Erick Benzi.
