The short answer
An English title and an English text do not tell the whole story of how an edition was made. Ask a narrower question: what evidence distinguishes original composition from translation, and which people did each kind of work?
Read the responsibility statement
Language, process and responsibility
Keep the claim no broader than the field or passage that supports it.
| Evidence | Supported reading | Remaining question |
|---|---|---|
| Language field | Describes a catalogued text | Does not alone establish original composition |
| Translation credit | Names a task and its contributor | Does not erase editing or revision |
| Draft and edition dates | May identify different events | Need not be first publication dates |

A timeline of the turning points
Three records, different claims
The 1995 catalog record for The Judgment explicitly says translated from Thai and names a translator, then separately names the editor and introducer.
The Monsoon Country catalog identifies English as the text language.
Major’s discussion supplies a different kind of evidence: Sudham wrote in English.
The second statement cannot replace the third. A language code describes what is in the catalogued object; it does not by itself reconstruct the process that produced it.
Editing is not an anonymous translation
The Deva’s publisher distinguishes an earlier story, a revised title, an initial translation and later translation editing.
A responsibility statement is best read as a map of tasks. One person may fill several roles, but the reader should not merge the roles merely because only one familiar name is remembered. A publication date likewise need not be the date when a draft translation was first made.

Worksheet: classify invented catalog cards
These three cards are invented. Card A reads: text language English; translator field blank. Card B reads: author Dara; translated from Thai by Mali; edited by Arun. Card C reads: English translation draft by Niran, 2012; translation editor Dao; bilingual edition, 2021. No card refers to a real book.
For each card, answer two questions: is original English composition established, and which contributor role is actually recorded? Add one question that you would ask before making a stronger claim. Do not supply missing history from a familiar author’s reputation.
Reference answer and the next research step
A: original English composition is unestablished. The blank field may reflect incomplete cataloguing; ask for a title-page responsibility statement or author testimony. B: the card expressly identifies a translation, with Mali and Arun performing different named tasks. It does not tell us whether Arun also translated elsewhere.
C: the card records a draft translator, a translation editor and a later edition date. It establishes neither that the draft was published in 2012 nor that Dao wrote the first English version. Ask to compare the publisher’s note with the relevant edition’s title page. The useful result is a precise next question, rather than a confident guess from an empty box.

Common questions
- Does a blank translator field prove there was no translator?
- No. Absence in that field is not evidence that a role never existed.
- Are the worksheet contributors real people?
- No. Their names and records were invented to isolate the reading problem.
