What the timeline shows
Badminton began the story. Diving and cycling widened it.
Malaysia’s first four medals all came from badminton, beginning with Razif and Jalani Sidek in 1992. Lee Chong Wei then became the country’s most decorated Olympian by total medals, winning singles silver at three consecutive Games.
Pandelela Rinong changed the pattern at London 2012 as the first Malaysian woman and first athlete outside badminton to reach an Olympic podium. Azizulhasni Awang added track cycling in Rio, then upgraded bronze to silver at Tokyo 2020.
Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik won bronze at both Tokyo and Paris, becoming Malaysia’s first doubles pair to medal at two Olympic Games. Paris 2024 added two bronzes but did not end the country’s wait for a first Olympic gold.
