From Penang courts to the national team
Lee Chong Wei was born in Bagan Serai, Perak, in 1982 and developed his game in Penang. He entered Malaysia’s national badminton system and built a professional career around speed, balance and the ability to defend before turning rallies into attack.
By the middle of the 2000s he had become Malaysia’s leading men’s singles player. He reached world No. 1 in 2006 and remained a central figure at the top of the rankings for much of the next decade.

Lee reached the men’s singles final at Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. The first two ended in defeat to Lin Dan; in Rio, Lee defeated Lin in the semi-final before losing the gold-medal match to Chen Long.

Lee was diagnosed with nose cancer in 2018. After treatment and an attempted return, he announced his retirement in June 2019, explaining that doctors had advised him against the training intensity required for elite competition.
The BWF inducted Lee and Lin Dan into its Hall of Fame in 2023. The recognition framed them together as rivals who raised the profile and competitive standard of men’s singles during the same era.
