A farm childhood and an unexpected screen career

Zoe Tay was born in Singapore on 10 January 1968. She grew up on a farm in Lim Chu Kang, a childhood she recalled in a 2023 interview marking 35 years in entertainment. Acting was not initially her ambition. A suggestion from her brother helped set her on a modelling path while she was still a teenager.

Winning Star Search in 1988 changed that direction. The competition offered a route into Singapore’s television industry, and Tay moved from modelling to full-time acting. Her later recollections describe a young performer learning a new profession rather than someone who entered television already certain of a decades-long star career.

Pretty Faces, The Unbeatables and Golden Pillow

Tay’s role as Bo Bo in Pretty Faces in 1991 became a turning point. Mediacorp’s Chinese-language profile identifies the character’s forceful personality as a departure that established her screen presence. She then played Luo Qifang in The Unbeatables, a series whose gambling-world setting and partnership with Li Nanxing became closely associated with her television image.

Golden Pillow brought her first Star Awards Best Actress win in 1996. The drama itself aired in 1995, so the production year and award year should remain distinct. These roles made her recognisable across different kinds of serial drama, rather than through a single film or one recurring character alone.

Acting awards are not the same as popularity honours

Tay received further Best Actress awards in 2017 for You Can Be An Angel 2 and in 2019 for A Million Dollar Dream. Mediacorp also records her 2004 All-Time Favourite Artiste recognition after ten consecutive Top 10 popularity awards. The first category judges a performance; the second reflects sustained audience popularity under the awards’ rules.

Her familiar nickname Ah Jie expresses her standing within the local industry, but is not a formal government or artistic qualification. Likewise, appearing on a nominee list does not establish a win. The organiser’s 2023 announcement lists her for Dark Angel among the Best Actress nominees; that document is not a results announcement. Keeping the categories separate makes her record clearer than a single inflated award total.

Later roles, conversation and public engagement

The long television career also included different formats and collaborations. Her filmography lists the 2013 telemovie Recipe, directed by Eric Khoo in Mediacorp’s Chinese profile. A decade later, she launched The Zoe and Liang Show with Guo Liang, extending her public work from scripted roles into conversation and reflection on entertainment.

In January 2024 she celebrated her birthday with residents of Lee Ah Mooi Old Age Home in an event organised by her fan club. The activity involved volunteers and donations rather than a claim that Tay ran the home herself. At Star Awards 2025 she joined the gathering of All-Time Favourite Artistes, while her continuing screen work remained separate from that recognition of an established career.

The profile inconsistently labels the 2021 performance as a win in its introduction and a nomination in its portfolio. This batch does not adjudicate or count that disputed entry; the corroborated 1996, 2017 and 2019 examples are sufficient. This is not an exhaustive awards list.
