An early interest in images and short films
Eric Khoo was born in Singapore in 1965. In an original interview with film scholars Jan Uhde and Yvonne Ng, he described childhood moviegoing and experimenting with his mother’s Super 8 camera. He later studied at the City Art Institute in Sydney before returning to Singapore and developing a body of short films.
The shorts gave him a way to work with images, atmosphere and small-scale stories before feature production. His background also included drawing and visual storytelling. It is useful to place that practical development before the later festival reputation, rather than treating international selection as the beginning of his interest in film.
Mee Pok Man and 12 Storeys
Mee Pok Man (1995), his first feature, followed a socially isolated noodle seller and a woman working in the city’s nightlife. Its attention to marginal lives was different from a polished promotional picture of Singapore. The National Library Board’s film history places Khoo among the figures who helped renew feature filmmaking during the 1990s.
His next feature, 12 Storeys (1997), brought a housing-block setting and several interconnected stories to Cannes’ Un Certain Regard programme. That selection mattered to the visibility of Singapore cinema, but it should not erase earlier local filmmaking or be recast as a main-competition prize. The renewal involved other directors, producers and audiences as well as one filmmaker.
Different festival sections, an arts honour and animation
Be with Me opened Directors’ Fortnight in 2005. The programme is distinct from Cannes’ official main competition, where My Magic was selected in 2008. The latter’s competition place was not a Palme d’Or win. In between those projects, Singapore’s National Arts Council awarded Khoo the Cultural Medallion in 2007.
Tatsumi (2011), his first animated feature, extended his work into a different visual form through the life and stories of Japanese manga artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi. Cannes presented it in Un Certain Regard. These films show a career moving among languages and forms, rather than a single uniform style or one category of festival recognition.
Producing other directors and working across borders
Khoo’s role was not limited to directing his own features. Cannes’ biography credits his production of Royston Tan’s 15 and Boo Junfeng’s Sandcastle (2010). Through Zhao Wei Films, this work supported projects carrying other directors’ creative perspectives. A producer’s contribution should be acknowledged without turning those films into Khoo’s directing credits.
Later work included Spirit World (2024), a Japan-set production starring Catherine Deneuve. The international sales record identifies Khoo as director, while Tokyo’s programme places it in the 2024 Gala Selection. The film’s cross-border production extends a career that began with Singapore stories, but a festival screening, a production year and later territorial release dates remain separate events.

The 1999 interview is used for attributed early experience, not current company offices or an up-to-date film count. It is an original conversation, not a claim that later memories prove every detail of Singapore’s film history.
- 3. Festival de Cannes · filmmaker and selection archiveDistinct film sections, Tatsumi and production of Sandcastle
Official selection records distinguish Un Certain Regard, main competition and the separate Directors’ Fortnight. A Palme d’Or competition selection is not a win. Sandcastle and 15 are producing credits, not Khoo directing credits.
