Paris beginnings and a musical childhood

Yo-Yo Ma was born in Paris on 7 October 1955 to Chinese parents. He began learning the cello with his father at four, developing a relationship with an instrument that would carry him into concert halls around the world. The family moved to New York when he was seven, placing much of his subsequent education and early musical development in the United States.

At Juilliard he studied with Leonard Rose, an important teacher in his formation as a cellist. These early lessons established technical foundations, but his later career would also turn on curiosity about people and unfamiliar musical settings. His Paris birthplace and American career belong together in understanding a life shaped by movement between cultures.

Harvard and a life beyond conservatory training

Ma pursued a liberal arts education at Harvard and graduated in 1976. His studies offered a wider intellectual setting alongside the discipline of instrumental practice. The Library of Congress describes his performing career after graduation and records the Avery Fisher Prize in 1978, an early recognition of his place in American concert life.

Harvard later awarded him an honorary degree in 1991, fifteen years after his undergraduate graduation. His musical training at Juilliard and liberal education at Harvard brought different kinds of study into the same life. That combination remains relevant to his interest in connecting performance with other fields and considering the place of music beyond the concert platform.

Three returns to Bach's cello suites

Bach's six suites for unaccompanied cello provide a thread through Ma's recording career. His first complete cycle appeared in 1983. Inspired by Bach followed in 1997, connecting a second recording with collaborations that explored the music through other artistic forms. The repeated return to the same works makes change in interpretation part of the story.

Sony Classical released Six Evolutions on 17 August 2018 as his third complete recording of the suites. Its accompanying project joined performances with community conversations and activities in different places. These are original album dates; later digital editions and repackaged releases may carry different years. Hearing the cycles in sequence offers one route into a musician's continuing engagement with a familiar score.

Collaboration and the founding of Silkroad

Ma's work also reaches beyond solo cello repertoire. Recordings with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Emanuel Ax, Kathryn Stott, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile place him in musical conversations requiring different kinds of responsiveness. A chamber partnership and a project drawing together different traditions both depend on listening, although they need not produce the same musical language.

In 1998 he founded Silkroad. The organization took the historical Silk Road as a metaphor for the circulation of ideas, bringing musicians and traditions into a contemporary collaborative setting. It developed an ensemble as well as educational and social work. The founding date describes this modern organization; the trade routes that inspired its name have a much longer and separate history.

Music as a way of meeting people

Education has remained part of Ma's public work. Silkroad's partnership with Harvard connected visiting artists, students and surrounding communities, while his other initiatives have asked how culture can bring people into conversation. The 2018 Bach project gave this idea a particular structure by placing community activity alongside a concert, rather than treating the performance as the only encounter.

His official biography identifies him as a United Nations Messenger of Peace and describes projects concerned with shared humanity and the natural world. Such roles extend the purposes of an established performing career. His contribution can be followed through particular recordings and partnerships, while his wider question remains accessible to any listener: what becomes possible when people attend closely to one another?
