A clothing shop formed the family background
Tadashi Yanai was born on 7 February 1949 in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture. UNIQLO’s January 2023 interview gives that date and place, while a SoftBank shareholder notice independently records the day. In the interview Yanai recalls growing up beside his father’s men’s clothing shop and observing its customers and staff. This is retrospective family testimony rather than a complete business register. Fast Retailing’s chronology separately dates the shop’s beginning to March 1949 and the incorporation of Ogori Shoji to May 1963. A family trade and a registered company therefore have different starting points.
The first UNIQLO store preceded his presidency
SoftBank’s 2019 nominee biography records Yanai joining Ogori Shoji in August 1972 and becoming president and chief executive in September 1984. Fast Retailing dates the first UNIQLO store, at Fukuromachi in Hiroshima, to June 1984. The store opening and executive appointment should not be merged into the same day. They mark related stages in converting a local clothing business into a different retail format. The company then opened a roadside store in Yamaguchi in 1985, extending the approach beyond its initial urban location.
A corporate name and product strategy evolved
Ogori Shoji adopted the Fast Retailing name in September 1991. Its chronology records stock-exchange milestones during the 1990s, a Tokyo office intended to strengthen product planning, and the 1998 fleece campaign. The Harajuku store opened that November as the first urban UNIQLO outlet in the company’s account. These developments connect product selection, price communication and store location, rather than explaining growth through a founder’s personality alone. They also distinguish the group’s corporate name from the UNIQLO retail brand, which remains only one part of the later business portfolio.

International expansion required more than new addresses
The first overseas UNIQLO store opened in London in September 2001, followed by a Shanghai store in September 2002. The same chronology records an online store and earlier work on production management in Shanghai. Together these entries show retail expansion accompanied by planning, sourcing and distribution systems. A list of openings cannot by itself establish durable profitability or working conditions across suppliers. Yanai’s public explanations of customer needs and clothing can help identify his intended strategy, but testing that strategy’s effects requires evidence from the operating businesses and the people involved.
Dated filings establish roles without freezing them forever
The 2019 SoftBank notice records a September 2005 appointment as Fast Retailing chairman, president and chief executive. Its repeated “to present” labels describe the date of that notice, not October 2026. A later Fast Retailing corporate-information section explicitly dated 31 December 2025 again names him in those roles. That is the dated position used here. The section distinguishes Fast Retailing’s holding-company activity from individual store operations and separately dates workforce and store counts to August 2025. These boundaries prevent a profile from silently mixing different reporting dates or asserting an unverified latest appointment.
Scale and personal wealth answer different questions
For the year ended 31 August 2025, Fast Retailing reported group revenue of ¥3,400,539 million and operating profit of ¥564,265 million. Its new business-profit indicator was a separate ¥551,156 million. These are corporate performance measures, not money personally received or owned by Yanai. The issuer also reported different results across brands and regions, which qualifies any simple story of uniform global success. His historical importance lies in building a large retail organisation around product and customer decisions. Assessment of its broader social and environmental effects needs evidence beyond executive interviews and company performance announcements.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions about Tadashi Yanai
- Did Yanai become president on the day the first UNIQLO store opened?
- The records give June 1984 for the store and September 1984 for his presidency.
- Are Fast Retailing’s revenue and Yanai’s personal wealth the same measure?
- No. Group revenue is a flow from corporate operations over a reporting period, not the founder’s net worth.
- What date supports his later executive title here?
- The cited corporate-information section is explicitly dated 31 December 2025; this biography does not assert an unverified latest October 2026 appointment.
