A Delhi performer before the movie star
Shah Rukh Khan was born in New Delhi on 2 November 1965. Delhi theatre and late-1980s television preceded his Mumbai film career. The serials Fauji and Circus established a recognisable, energetic performer before cinema gave him a much larger platform. This sequence matters because his arrival in films was supported by practical performance experience and a public already familiar with his face.
Producer Guddu Dhanoa later recalled that Shekhar Kapur recommended Khan for Deewana after Armaan Kohli left the project. Raj Kanwar directed the 1992 film, with Rishi Kapoor and Divya Bharti also starring. Earlier commitments and the order in which films reached theatres make a first released feature different from a first offer or first day of shooting.
Dangerous characters and a romantic reinvention
Khan’s early reputation included the negative roles of Baazigar and Darr in 1993 and Anjaam in 1994. These characters drew attention to obsession, manipulation and violence rather than offering uncomplicated heroic virtue. His intensity could attract an audience while the stories exposed the damage done by the men he played.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, released on 20 October 1995, made a different arrangement of that energy. As Raj opposite Kajol’s Simran, he played a young man who sought acceptance within her family. Aditya Chopra wrote and directed; Yash Chopra produced. The film’s lasting association with Khan does not make him its director or sole creative author.
Roles beyond the familiar embrace
The career’s range becomes clearer through particular projects. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas cast him alongside Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit in a destructive love story. Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades placed an overseas Indian’s return at the centre of a social drama. Shimit Amin’s Chak De! India gave him a coach whose relationship with a women’s hockey team tested professional authority and national belonging.
These films coexist with comedies, thrillers and commercial romantic vehicles. They show how an established star can carry expectations from earlier performances into a new role. A viewer recognising the romantic celebrity may therefore encounter a more reserved, compromised or demanding figure, rather than a repetition of Raj in another setting.

A public extending beyond India
In his 2025 TIME interview Khan credited the diaspora with helping make him a star. That is his account of an audience relationship, not a measurement of every overseas viewer. His romantic films offered recognisable family rituals and disputes to people living far from India, while also reaching viewers without that background.
Institutional recognition included Edinburgh’s honorary doctorate in 2015 and Locarno’s Pardo alla Carriera in 2024. The Edinburgh release describes a distinction for his acting reach and charitable work. It was an honorary degree, not a research qualification. Locarno’s annual report records a career award and public conversation, reflecting the festival’s recognition of a body of work.
Pathaan, protest and commercial cinema
Reuters reported packed cinemas and protests when Siddharth Anand’s Pathaan opened in January 2023. Some Hindu nationalist groups objected to a promotional song featuring Deepika Padukone in saffron swimwear, claiming religious offence. That objection was made by those groups; it is not an established description of the filmmakers’ intent.
The episode placed a popular Muslim actor inside a broader argument about religion, entertainment and public belonging. It also showed that organised hostility and audience enthusiasm could exist at the same time. The film’s reception cannot be reduced either to the boycott campaign or to box-office celebration alone.

Jawan and the distinction between a film year and an award year
Atlee’s Jawan was released in 2023. On 1 August 2025 the government announced Khan’s first National Film Award: Best Actor in a Leading Role, shared with Vikrant Massey for 12th Fail. The awards covered films from 2023. President Droupadi Murmu presented Khan’s award in New Delhi on 23 September 2025.
Keeping those dates separate prevents an inaccurate claim that Jawan was a 2025 release. By the review date of 23 October 2026, this recognition belonged to a career already spanning television, varied screen roles and production. His significance rests in those changing collaborations and audiences, rather than a fixed ranking of wealth or worldwide popularity.
