The defender beside the captain
Santokh Singh was born in Setapak in 1952 and built his senior career with Selangor. He entered Malaysia’s national team in 1973, when the side needed a physically reliable centre-back who could compete through demanding regional schedules.
Soh Chin Aun organised the line; Santokh supplied confrontation, recovery and aerial strength. Their contrasting qualities produced a partnership remembered as the foundation of Malaysia’s golden generation.
Continental and regional medals
Malaysia’s bronze medal at the 1974 Asian Games demonstrated that the team could survive high-level knockout football. Santokh’s role was less visible than the goals that won matches, but the campaign depended on defensive control.
He was also part of the sides that won SEA Games football gold in 1977 and 1979. Those titles placed Malaysia at the centre of Southeast Asian competition before the modern AFF Championship era.
The Moscow qualification campaign
In 1980 Malaysia came through an Olympic qualifying group staged in Kuala Lumpur. Santokh played in the campaign as the team reached the decisive match against Korea Republic and won 2–1.
Malaysia did not attend the Moscow Games because of the international boycott. The qualification nonetheless remains a sporting achievement in its own right and a defining chapter for the players who earned it.
