Building a modern striker’s career
Safee Sali was born in Kajang in 1984 and began senior football with Kuala Lumpur in 2004. Spells with Sarawak and Selangor developed him into a centre-forward capable of holding off defenders and attacking the penalty area decisively.
He entered the Malaysia team in 2006. By the end of the decade he had the physical presence and tournament experience to lead a young side through a difficult regional championship.
Five goals and a first AFF title
Malaysia’s 2010 AFF Championship began with a heavy defeat to Indonesia, but the team recovered. Safee scored twice in the first semi-final against Vietnam and twice again in the first final leg against Indonesia.
His goal in Jakarta completed a five-goal tournament and secured the Golden Boot as Malaysia won 4–2 on aggregate. It was the country’s first title in the competition and one of the clearest modern examples of a striker defining an entire campaign.
Indonesia and Johor Darul Ta’zim
The tournament created demand beyond Malaysia. Safee signed for Pelita Jaya in 2011, gaining a large Indonesian following and experiencing the intensity of a different domestic league.
He returned to Malaysia with Johor Darul Ta’zim in 2013. During the club’s rapid rise he won domestic league titles and was part of the squad that lifted the AFC Cup in 2015.
A bridge between two eras
RSSSF records 76 full internationals and 23 goals between 2006 and 2017. Those figures place Safee well below Mokhtar Dahari’s historic total but among Malaysia’s leading recognised international scorers.
He retired from professional football in 2023. His lasting image is the 2010 forward in yellow and black: direct, forceful and able to turn regional pressure into the country’s first AFF Championship.
