Writing across the borders of genre
Cayabyab studied music at the University of the Philippines and emerged nationally when Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika won the first Metro Manila Popular Music Festival in 1978. His catalogue came to include pop songs, choral and orchestral works, theatre, film scores and music for television.
That range made him a connective figure in OPM rather than the representative of a single style. He arranged for major singers, wrote for ensembles including Smokey Mountain and brought harmonic and structural sophistication into music intended for a broad audience.
Mentorship as part of the composition
With his wife, Cayabyab founded a music school in 1986. Teaching, workshops, festivals and television projects made the development of younger musicians a continuing part of his practice rather than a separate activity.
He was proclaimed National Artist for Music in 2018 and received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2019. Both honours recognised a body of work whose importance lies not only in individual songs, but also in the musical community and professional standards he helped sustain.
