Training and a route abroad

Reyes was born on 14 October 1942.

Tats Rejante-Manahan’s later recollection places her in the Bayanihan Dance Company before further study abroad.

The Asian Cultural Council records a 1969 grant for dance and dance-theory study at Sarah Lawrence College in a programme leading to an MFA.

Rejante-Manahan describes exposure to Alwin Nikolais, Murray Louis and Merce Cunningham as part of the formative American experience.

A company and a growing repertoire

NCCA’s historical account places her modern-dance work at CCP in 1970.

The company that became Ballet Philippines began privately as Alice Reyes and Modern Dance Company. With Eddie Elejar initially co-directing, she built a repertoire that included Amada, Itim Asu, Rama Hari and Carmen, with works by Elejar, Fabella, Gener Caringal and Norman Walker alongside ballet classics.

Rejante-Manahan remembers a leader working with longtime colleagues, including Nes Jardin, rather than making the institution alone.

Collaboration on the stage

ARDP dates the choreography of Rama, Hari to 1979. Reyes directed and choreographed it, with music by Ryan Cayabyab, a libretto by Bienvenido Lumbera and designs by Salvador Bernal.

CCP identifies its premiere as 1980.

The later production credits also name Rolando Tinio for translations.

The different dates identify different creative events. The work can retain its original collaborators while new performers and a restaging team bring it to another audience.

Supporting another generation

ARDP describes its origin in the displacement of professional artists during the pandemic in 2020, with Reyes as founder. It combines repertoire, training and regional work.

CCP’s 2023 production records identify her as National Artist for Dance.

The 2023 Rama Hari production included artists from a regional residency and trainees from several schools.

The company separately credits its artistic leadership and a restager, Lester Reguindin. It describes regional training, intensive workshops and collaborative projects as ways of making dance accessible across the country.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions about Alice Reyes

Is a founder automatically the current artistic director?
No. A foundation credit and a current office are different statements; the institution’s dated role records must be consulted.
Does a revival create a new original-work date?
No. Creation, premiere and later staging should remain separately identified.
