Languages, study and teaching

Robert Yeo was born in Singapore in 1940 and registered as Yeo Cheng Chuan. He grew up in a Peranakan Hokkien family, first speaking Peranakan Malay before learning English at school.

After an honours degree in English, he studied comparative education in London from 1966 to 1968. He later worked in Bangkok as an information officer before returning to teacher education. Ryan Howโ€™s account for poetry.sg dates his lecturing at the Institute of Education to 1973.

Poetry and the local stage

His first poetry collection, Coming Home Baby, appeared in 1971. Are You There Singapore? reached the stage in 1974 with Prem Kumar directing. One Year Back Home followed in 1980 and Changi in 1997, continuing his engagement with political questions.

Esplanade records his anthology editing and advocacy for teaching Singapore literature. Howโ€™s 2015 introduction also describes his drama-advisory responsibilities and mentoring of writers, placing education alongside publication rather than outside his literary career.

Memoir as a form of organisation

In 2011, Yeo published Routes: A Singaporean Memoir 1940โ€“75. His 2012 first-person article explains how family journeys and the pun on routes and roots shaped its title. He describes moving between personal experience, wider events and reflection from the present.

The article discusses epigraphs, intertextuality and collage as choices in organising a life story. It is a valuable account of his method, though it does not make every recollection an independently corroborated historical fact.

Continuing across forms

His work also extended to opera. With Leow Siak Fah and composer John Sharpley, he founded OperaViva in 2008, after writing the libretto Fences. This added collaborative performance to a career already spanning classrooms, poetry, drama and prose.

Howโ€™s dated introduction records creative-writing teaching and mentoring. Taken alongside Yeoโ€™s own account of memoir, these activities show writing as an ongoing practice of reading, selecting and helping others find forms for experience.
