Consumer businesses before Silicon Valley
Meg Whitman was born on Long Island, New York, on 4 August 1956. She studied economics at Princeton and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1979. Her early career took her through consumer products, consulting and established brands rather than directly into a software startup. Procter & Gamble, Bain, Disney, Stride Rite, FTD and Hasbro were among the businesses where she worked before eBay.
Those positions involved understanding customers, positioning products and managing organizations with different operating demands. Harvard's account emphasizes this breadth of experience. At eBay, she would enter a company whose technical idea and user community already existed, but whose expanding operations required management beyond the skills of any single programmer or founder.
Joining eBay, not founding it
Whitman became eBay's president and chief executive in 1998. Pierre Omidyar had launched the service as AuctionWeb in 1995, and the company had incorporated in California in May 1996. The contemporary annual report identifies Omidyar as founder and chairman, alongside Whitman's executive responsibilities. Other leaders handled finance, product development, site operations and strategy.
The business brought buyers and sellers together through online auctions. It did not buy the listed goods as warehouse inventory; sellers paid listing and transaction-related fees. Whitman therefore managed a marketplace whose value depended on users continuing to participate and trust one another. Her task was to help the organization support that activity at greater scale, not to supply every product sold through the website.
A public company with operating obligations
eBay's shares began trading on Nasdaq on 24 September 1998. Its first earnings release as a public company reported increased spending on equipment, customer support, product development and marketing. Expansion required more than attracting attention: the service had to remain available, answer users' questions and respond to disputes. The annual report also acknowledged fraud, unlawful listings and uncertainty about future growth.
Whitman remained CEO until 2008. eBay expanded internationally and through acquisitions during her tenure, but its results were produced by employees, users and a broader organization. The company's January 1999 release reported $47.4 million in 1998 net revenue. That was company revenue, not the much larger value of goods users exchanged, and neither figure by itself measured Whitman's personal contribution.
HP, HPE and a venture that closed
In September 2011, Whitman became president and CEO of Hewlett-Packard. She later led Hewlett Packard Enterprise after the 2015 separation that created distinct enterprise-technology and personal-computing-and-printing businesses. The distinction matters: leading HPE was not the same job as running HP Inc. Her responsibilities included restructuring an established organization rather than creating either company from its earliest beginnings.
Antonio Neri succeeded her at HPE in February 2018. Whitman then led Quibi, a short-form video venture associated with Jeffrey Katzenberg. Its leaders announced a wind-down in October 2020, only months after launch. The outcome contrasts with eBay's sustained expansion: earlier management success and substantial backing did not ensure that a different product would find a durable audience.
Diplomacy and a dated return to board leadership
Whitman served as United States ambassador to Kenya from 2022 to 2024. In a November 2024 personal account, she said she had submitted her resignation and would return to the United States. Diplomacy added a public role to a career largely spent in corporate leadership, with responsibilities extending beyond the customers and shareholders of a single business.
On 9 September 2026, Albertsons announced her appointment as executive chair of its board. The release described a role supporting CEO Susan Morris and her management team, not replacing Morris as chief executive. Across these settings, Whitman's career concerns the exercise of professional management and institutional authority. It includes different businesses and outcomes, rather than a single uninterrupted story of a founder building one enterprise.
