Computing training before the public platform
NAVER’s indexed board profile identifies Lee Hae-jin as born in June 1967 and records a computing bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University and a master’s from KAIST. The report gives no exact birthday in the sampled row. It is a useful identification record, though the complete integrated report was not read. The technical training helps place Lee’s career within software and information services. It does not establish that he personally wrote every later product or algorithm. A founder biography needs to preserve that distinction between individual preparation and the collective engineering required to sustain a large platform.

The company and service have a dated beginning
NAVER’s corporate history dates its incorporation and search-portal launch to June 1999. In July 2000 it acquired Hangame Communications, One-Cue and Search Solutions; September 2001 brought the NHN corporate name. Those entries show a search venture developing through combinations with other software and internet businesses. Lee’s founding role, identified in the board profile, belongs within this changing organisation. The later group did not appear fully formed on its incorporation date. Acquired capabilities, employees and management decisions became part of the business alongside the original search service, giving the company a history broader than a single founder’s initial project.
Local search strategy drew on hosted participation
In an August 2023 shareholder letter, chief executive Choi Soo-yeon described NAVER’s earlier strategy through localisation, user intent and hosted community content. The letter places vertical-search integration in 2000 and KnowledgeiN within search from 2002. These are the later CEO’s retrospective explanations, rather than a statement written by Lee at the time. They help identify the business problem: a search service can draw on material contributed within its own platform as well as external web pages. The letter’s assertions of superior quality remain management claims. The existence of a strategy and its comparative success require different kinds of evidence.

KnowledgeiN depended on people beyond the founder
NAVER dates KnowledgeiN’s launch to 7 October 2002. Its twentieth-anniversary release describes users voluntarily asking and answering questions, alongside expert and organisational participation. That structure makes sole authorship an especially poor explanation of the service. A founder and company can create the conditions for participation, while users supply much of the material people later search. The release’s reported scale should also be read carefully: questions, answers and users are different units. A large total of contributions does not independently establish accuracy, the number of complete answer pairs or the number of distinct people responsible for every contribution.

The group’s structure and infrastructure continued to change
The corporate history records an August 2013 split between NAVER Corporation and NHN Entertainment, formerly associated with Hangame. That year also brought the DATA CENTER GAK facility. In July 2016 LINE listed in New York and Tokyo, while January 2017 saw the establishment of the research-focused NAVER Labs. These milestones place search and community services within a wider organisation of infrastructure, research and affiliated businesses. An older reference to NHN cannot therefore be assigned automatically to every later NAVER financial boundary. Lee’s career developed within a changing group whose later activities involved other executives, engineers and institutional partners.

Use dated governance records without freezing the present
The sampled integrated-report row records a board term beginning in March 2025 and scheduled through March 2028. That is a dated governance record, not proof that no subsequent change could occur. This profile therefore describes Lee’s established founding role without treating an older disclosure as a live October 2026 office check. The same discipline applies to platform statistics and management assessments: each needs its own date and definition. Lee’s significance lies in the creation and development of a major internet business, while the evidence used here keeps its collaborative production, corporate changes and limits of source access visible.
