How Hong Leong entered CDL

CDL began in 1963, before Kwek joined its board. Its 2023 annual report says that in 1969 he proposed investing in the financially struggling developer to his father. His first director appointment was on 1 October that year. Hong Leong acquired a controlling stake in 1972, expanding its involvement beyond the initial investment.

In 1974 Kwek Hong Png became chairman and Kwek Leng Beng became managing director. The younger Kwek was appointed executive chairman on 1 January 1995. These are separate stages of a career, not alternative dates for founding CDL. Investment properties became another important part of the business alongside residential development.

Millennium & Copthorne and international hotels

Hotels became a major route for overseas expansion. CDL’s heritage record describes the acquisition of the Copthorne chain and the launch of the Millennium brand in 1995. Millennium & Copthorne Hotels was then listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1996, giving the hospitality arm a public-market identity of its own.

That ownership structure changed in 2019. A successful CDL privatisation exercise was followed by the hotel company’s London delisting in October, after which it became a wholly owned subsidiary. Delisting the corporate vehicle did not mean that every hotel closed or was sold. It changed how the business was owned within the group.

The 2025 board dispute and continuing roles

In February 2025, a disagreement over CDL board resolutions became public and led to legal proceedings. The company’s exchange announcement records that Kwek and three other directors filed an application on 25 February against several fellow directors. Those proceedings reflected a governance dispute, not a court finding that the allegations had been proved.

On 12 March, Kwek issued a statement on behalf of the full board announcing that the legal action would be discontinued. He would remain executive chairman, his son Sherman Kwek would continue as group chief executive officer, and the current directors would remain. CDL’s board page checked for this biography still identifies him as executive chairman. The dated resolution avoids leaving the dispute described as an ongoing lawsuit.
