A post-war trading beginning
Robert Kuok was born in Johor Bahru in 1923. In 1949, he and members of his family incorporated Kuok Brothers, a small business trading rice, sugar and wheat flour at a time when Malaya’s economy was rebuilding after the Second World War.
The company expanded to Singapore in 1953 and then into Thailand and Indonesia. Its early growth rested on commodity knowledge, regional relationships and a willingness to move beyond trading into the processing and transport systems around it.
From commodities to industry
The group entered flour milling through Federal Flour Mills and developed interests in plantations, edible oils, shipping and property. These moves linked the business to several layers of the food supply chain rather than a single commodity market.
In 1968, Perlis Plantations Berhad—later PPB Group—was incorporated. The public company became an important Malaysian investment vehicle with interests that would include agribusiness, film exhibition, property and environmental engineering.
Creating an Asian hospitality brand
The opening of Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore in 1971 gave the group a consumer-facing international identity. Shangri-La International Hotel Management was formed in 1979 as the hotel portfolio grew across the region.
Hospitality was only one part of a wider network. Kerry Holdings, established in Hong Kong in 1974, supported expansion into mainland China, while maritime and logistics businesses connected the group’s trading origins to regional infrastructure.
