From Muay Thai to professional boxing
Born Sura Saenkham in Phetchabun, Khaosai first competed in Muay Thai before adopting the ring name that became nationally familiar. He turned to professional boxing in 1980.
An early points loss was the only defeat of his professional career. He rebuilt through domestic competition and earned a world-title opportunity in 1984.
Nineteen successful defences
Khaosai won the vacant WBA super-flyweight title by stopping Eusebio Espinal. He then defended it nineteen times across seven years, bringing championship boxing to audiences throughout Thailand and the wider region.
His southpaw stance and body punching supplied the dramatic image, but durability and consistency explain the length of the reign. He retired in 1991 without surrendering the title in the ring.
A closed record and lasting benchmark
Khaosai’s twin brother fought as Khaokor Galaxy and also won a world championship, giving the family an unusual place in boxing history.
International Boxing Hall of Fame induction followed in 1999. Later Thai champions have built different global careers, but nineteen successful defences remain a clear benchmark for sustained championship performance.
