Education, public-policy work and the route to Parliament
Khairy Jamaluddin was born in Kuwait on 10 January 1976. His father was a Malaysian diplomat, and his own biography records an international education: United World College of South East Asia, philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford, and postgraduate study in legal and political theory at University College London.
He worked with Abdullah Ahmad Badawi before entering Parliament, holding staff responsibilities while Abdullah was deputy prime minister and later prime minister. His subsequent representation of Rembau lasted from 2008 to 2022. Family connections were part of the public setting of that rise, but a staff appointment, a parliamentary mandate and a party position were different sources of authority.
UMNO Youth and the first cabinet portfolios
Khairy became a prominent figure in UMNO’s youth organisation and served as youth and sports minister from 2013 to 2018. That portfolio linked participation programmes with elite sport and major events. It also gave him a national administrative role beyond representing a constituency or speaking for the party’s younger members.
He returned to the cabinet as science, technology and innovation minister in 2020. This was a different administration and set of responsibilities, not a continuation of the earlier sports ministry. His personal biography supplies a useful outline, while contemporary reporting helps distinguish the public appointments from the more favourable assessment of his performance offered on his own website.
Vaccination coordination before the health ministry
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Khairy was appointed to coordinate the national immunisation programme while still holding the science portfolio. A Bernama account of his July 2021 parliamentary briefing records vaccination delivery, access and the questions put to the government. Coordination of the programme therefore preceded his later appointment as health minister.
He held the health portfolio from 2021 to 2022 under Ismail Sabri Yaakob. Beyond the immediate pandemic response, he promoted the 2022 tobacco-control proposal known as the Generational Endgame, aimed at people born from 2007 onward. Debate exposed differences over enforcement and individual rights. On 2 August, the bill was referred to a parliamentary committee rather than receiving a final vote. The episode belongs to his policy record as a proposal, not a law he had successfully enacted.
Electoral change, broadcasting and UMNO readmission
The end of his parliamentary career in 2022 was followed by a party rupture. In January 2023, UMNO expelled Khairy during a wider disciplinary action against senior figures. CNA’s contemporary reporting distinguishes his expulsion from the suspensions imposed on some other politicians. Losing membership was not itself a court judgment or a permanent statutory ban on political activity.
Outside elected office, he developed a public role through the Keluar Sekejap podcast and radio broadcasting. A further change came in April 2026, when UMNO accepted his return through its Rumah Bangsa initiative. Bernama reported his response after the leadership’s decision. Readmission restored party membership; it did not automatically give him a parliamentary seat, ministerial portfolio or the national leadership.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions about Khairy Jamaluddin

- No. His vaccination-coordination role began while he held the science portfolio. The health appointment came later in 2021.
- Was Khairy born in Rembau?
- Bernama identifies Kuwait as his place of birth. Kampung Gadong in Rembau is his paternal hometown; the two details should not be conflated.
