Why this life matters
His collaboration with Ngaiming Mok connected families of curve directions to global questions about complex manifolds.

Complex-geometry centre
The IBS centre is established in September.
From physics to complex geometry
Hwang’s IBS biography records a physics bachelor’s degree at Seoul National University in 1986 and a mathematics doctorate at Harvard in 1993. He worked at Notre Dame and SNU before joining the Korea Institute for Advanced Study in 1999.
His later work sits where algebraic equations, complex analysis and differential geometry meet. The change of disciplinary setting is part of his career, rather than a reason to relabel his documented undergraduate degree.

Curves as geometric information
His 2001 exposition presents joint work with Ngaiming Mok on extending holomorphic maps that preserve tangent directions to minimal rational curves. The statement includes conditions on the geometric objects and on the collection of directions; it is not a claim about one arbitrary tangent line.
Mok’s 2008 account describes their joint programme using varieties of minimal rational tangents to investigate complex manifolds.
An international mathematical conversation
The Korean Mathematical Society’s 2021 IMU application lists Hwang as an invited ICM speaker in 2006 and plenary speaker in 2014. The entries place his contributions in algebraic and complex geometry within an international research conversation.

A centre for interacting methods
IBS established its Center for Complex Geometry in September 2020 with Hwang as director. The centre description connects algebraic geometry, differential geometry and several-variable complex analysis, stressing interaction among researchers from these areas.
This institutional setting complements the mathematical collaboration: progress can depend on translating a problem into a language where a different method becomes available. The research programme concerns precise classes of spaces and maps, rather than a universal rule that local similarity always determines global form.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions about Jun-Muk Hwang
- Is the tangent warm-up a proof of his theorem?
- No. It illustrates information loss in an elementary example; the research theorem has different objects and explicit hypotheses.
