Learning banking and technology
Ovia was born in Agbor in 1951. His early employment included a clerical banking post in 1973 and later merchant-banking and corporate-finance work.
He earned a business-administration BSc at Southern University in 1977 and an MBA in Louisiana in 1979. His own account places an interest in computing during his college years.
Building a banking institution
He founded Zenith Bank in 1990 and became its pioneer managing director and chief executive. He remained chief executive for twenty years, leaving that position in July 2010. The bank’s development gave Ovia a public identity that extended beyond his earlier jobs in established financial institutions.
A founder’s biography can explain the route into a venture while leaving room for the employees, investors and executives who subsequently sustain it.

Leadership and succession
Zenith’s 2019 board biography records his return as chairman in 2014.
On 5 May 2026, the bank announced his retirement after twelve years as non-executive director and group chairman. Its notice said the board had approved Mustafa Bello’s appointment on 27 April and that the appointment had CBN approval.
The notice date and the board-decision date identify different events; neither is silently substituted for an unstated effective date.
Other enterprises and education
Ovia also founded Visafone Communications.
His educational projects include James Hope College in Agbor and scholarship and technology initiatives through his foundation.
The biographical record lists his book Africa Rise and Shine in 2018.
These ventures broaden the career beyond one bank.
