From business to sanitation advocacy

Jack Sim was born in Singapore in 1957, according to Ashoka’s institutional biography. He built businesses, including in construction, before redirecting his efforts toward social causes after attaining financial independence around the age of forty. Sanitation became the focus of that change rather than another conventional product business.

His commercial experience informed how he approached an issue often kept out of public conversation. Toilets involved public health, maintenance and everyday behaviour, but embarrassment could prevent discussion. Ashoka describes his approach as bringing enterprise and partnerships to a problem that needed both public attention and practical services.

Two organisations and an international campaign

Sim founded the Restroom Association (Singapore), formally established on 8 December 1998. It focused on better restroom conditions and public awareness. He then founded the World Toilet Organization on 19 November 2001, extending the effort through an international network rather than simply renaming the Singapore association.

The World Toilet Summit and World Toilet Day campaign began in 2001. The organisation is a sanitation nonprofit, not the World Trade Organization with which it shares initials. Its work brought toilet associations, public agencies, researchers, companies and civil society into a setting where a neglected topic could be discussed openly.

Publicity, partnerships and training

Sim’s advocacy uses publicity and convening alongside the practical incentives familiar from business. Ashoka’s 2007 profile describes a historical model in which an industry exhibition helped finance a citizen-sector forum. That account explains an approach to sustaining advocacy; it is not a claim about the organisation’s present-day income.

The World Toilet Organization added World Toilet College in 2005, linking awareness with sanitation education and training. Partnerships were intended to connect the people designing, financing and maintaining facilities. Training and convening were therefore different parts of the work, not interchangeable measures of how many people had obtained lasting access to sanitation.

UN recognition and broader social enterprise

On 24 July 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted the designation of 19 November as World Toilet Day following Singapore’s initiative. This gave formal UN recognition to an existing campaign; it did not launch Sim’s work for the first time. The resolution was A/RES/67/291.

Sim also founded BoP Hub to support social-enterprise partnerships addressing poverty. NUS identifies him as a Master in Public Administration alumnus from 2013. His recognition includes an Ashoka Fellowship in 2007 and selection among TIME’s Heroes of the Environment in 2008. These honours accompany his work but do not replace evidence of particular programmes’ results.
