Industrial experience before the GS name
Born in 1948, Huh studied business at Korea University. A republished profile dates his entry into LG’s planning organisation to 1977 and describes later trading and chemical-industry work. He subsequently chaired LG Cable and LG Construction.
This was a career inside an established business network before he became the public head of a separate group. Experience across trading, production and construction gave his later coordinating role an industrial background, rather than making GS a new company without organisational predecessors.

A new group and its board
After GS’s formal launch in March 2005, Huh visited GS Caltex’s Yeosu site with outside directors on 8–9 April. The company’s announcement names Huh Dong-soo, Seo Kyung-seok and four outside directors among the participants. It describes giving directors a closer understanding of operating facilities.
The announcement also states that GS had four outside directors and three inside directors when it began in 2004. These are evidence of a stated governance arrangement and a particular visit. Counting directors alone does not establish how independently a board exercised judgment.

A portfolio and the problem of adaptation
The retrospective profile describes expansion through the 2009 acquisition of Ssangyong, later GS Global, and the 2013 acquisition of STX Energy, later GS E&R. Its account places energy, retail and construction alongside the group’s newer activities.
At GS’s August 2019 executive meeting, Huh urged managers to reconsider strategy and systems, study younger consumers and explore Southeast Asian markets. The corporate account records what leadership wanted managers to address. It does not by itself measure the success of every initiative or attribute affiliate employees’ work solely to the chairman.
Separating a transition from its formal steps
On 3 December 2019, Yonhap reported Huh’s announcement that he would step down as group chairman and the selection of Huh Tae-soo. It also said the formal succession to GS’s representative-director and board-chair positions would follow shareholder and board procedures in 2020. The announcement and those legal steps were distinct.
The report described continuing honorary, construction and Federation of Korean Industries roles. The 2021 profile likewise records his broader business-representation work, which began at the federation in 2011. Those historical descriptions are not presented as a current 2026 list of offices.
