Building strength from Zamboanga
Diaz began lifting in Zamboanga City with improvised equipment before entering the national programme. She was only seventeen when she represented the Philippines at the 2008 Beijing Games.
Two difficult Olympic cycles preceded her breakthrough. In Rio in 2016, Diaz won silver in the 53 kg class, becoming the first woman from the Philippines to reach an Olympic podium.
The first Philippine Olympic gold
At Tokyo 2020, held in 2021, Diaz lifted in the 55 kg category. Her final clean and jerk secured gold and set an Olympic record for the combined total at the time.
The medal ended the country’s wait for an Olympic title since it first joined the Games in 1924. Diaz’s achievement also highlighted the long training, coaching, nutrition and financial support required behind a single historic lift.
