Learning a technical event at world level
Obiena grew up around pole vault through his father, former national athlete Emerson Obiena. After early success in Asia, he moved to Italy to train with Vitaly Petrov, entering a system built around repeated technical refinement and international competition.
He won the 2019 Asian title and reached the Tokyo Olympic final. At the 2022 World Championships in Oregon, a 5.94-metre clearance brought bronze—the Philippines’ first medal in the history of the outdoor World Athletics Championships.
Six metres and a place among the global elite
In June 2023, Obiena cleared 6.00 metres in Bergen to become the first Asian member of pole vault’s six-metre club. He matched the height at the Budapest World Championships to take silver, then won the Asian Games with a Games record of 5.90 metres.
At Paris 2024, Obiena cleared 5.90 metres in the final and finished fourth on countback. The narrow result did not erase the larger shift: a Filipino athlete had become a regular medal contender in an event long dominated by European and North American systems.
