Georgette Chen was born Zhang Liying in China and grew up between Asia and the West. She studied art in Paris and developed a practice grounded in European oil painting while maintaining strong connections to Chinese subjects, family networks and political upheaval.
Making a home in Singapore
After wartime displacement and the death of her husband Eugene Chen, she settled in Singapore in 1953. Tropical fruit, local landscapes, friends and neighbours entered her paintings. Her work did not simply import a European method; it adapted observation, colour and composition to a Southeast Asian environment.
Teaching and the national collection
Chen taught at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts for more than a quarter-century, influencing younger artists through rigorous drawing and close observation.
