French upbringing and Cambodian family connections
Davy Chou was born in the Paris region of France in 1983 to Cambodian-born parents. His grandfather, Van Chann, was a Cambodian film producer. Those family and professional connections provide the basis for his place in a Cambodian cinema archive without implying that he was born in Cambodia.
His work developed across national settings rather than under one exclusive identity. Production and festival records identify a French filmmaker with Cambodian parentage and a continuing relationship with Phnom Penh’s film community. That relationship matters to his career alongside the French and Korean settings of later work.
Golden Slumbers and the recovery of cinema history
Golden Slumbers, completed in 2011, investigates Cambodian cinema before the Khmer Rouge through surviving memories of its films and performers. The documentary looks toward a screen culture whose material traces and participants had been profoundly disrupted, making recollection part of the filmmaking process.
Its Berlinale Forum appearance followed in 2012. Those dates identify the film’s production year and a later festival presentation, not two different documentaries. Golden Slumbers was a feature-length documentary before Chou’s fiction features; calling Diamond Island his first feature of any kind would omit that earlier work.

Anti-Archive and Diamond Island
Chou co-founded Anti-Archive in Phnom Penh in 2014 with Steve Chen and Kavich Neang. The company connected his own directing with production and support for other filmmakers. His production work later included Kavich Neang’s White Building in 2021.
Diamond Island, his first fiction feature, appeared in 2016. He shared its screenplay credit with Claire Maugendre. The film premiered at Critics’ Week and received the SACD prize there. Critics’ Week’s award and selection history should be identified specifically, rather than relabelled as a Palme d’Or or as sole authorship of a collaboratively written film.
Return to Seoul: direction, performance and different awards
Chou wrote and directed Return to Seoul in 2022, starring Park Ji-min as a French adoptee confronting her Korean origins. The film screened in Cannes’s Un Certain Regard, a selection that does not by itself establish a Cannes award.
At the 2022 Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Chou won Best Director while Park received Best New Performer. Return to Seoul was a Best Film nominee, not the Best Film winner. Distinguishing the director’s prize from the performer’s award and the film’s nomination preserves the contributions of each participant without turning several categories into one undifferentiated victory.
