A fishing-village background and a teaching career
Chia Song Kun was born and raised in Sungai Burong on Selangor’s northern coast. The EY country-award profile describes him as the fourth of fifteen children in a fisherman’s family. QL’s own biography supplies the more detailed educational path: a mathematics honours degree from the University of Malaya in 1973, followed by an MBA from the same university in 1988. The inspected records do not securely establish his birth date.
He began as a tutor and then taught at Institut Teknologi Mara, now Universiti Teknologi MARA. The company records eleven years of teaching ending in 1984. That background places education and quantitative study before his later public-company career. His later use of the title Doctor rests on explicitly honorary awards, not an earned doctorate in mathematics or management.
Trading becomes a connected food business
After his academic career, Chia entered business with brothers and brothers-in-law, initially trading fishmeal and feed ingredients. The company biography credits this family initiative as the origin of the enterprise he co-founded. The collaborators matter: the business did not grow from his efforts in isolation, and different members later held different management responsibilities.
The award account describes the emerging business model through linked coastal and agricultural activities, including fish processing, livestock farming and palm-related businesses. QL’s later biography also identifies convenience stores and clean energy among its activities. The practical organising idea was to build connections among supplies, processing and routes to customers. The records describe that development, while their claims about sustainability, uninterrupted growth and national benefit remain the assessments of an issuer and a celebratory award publication.
Leadership changes have separate dates
QL records Chia’s appointment as group managing director on 3 January 2000 and his redesignation as executive chairman on 1 April 2018. Those are company appointments, distinct from the earlier family trading activities. A career chronology should retain both the commercial beginnings and the later governance milestones.
The 2025 corporate-governance report adds another important transition. It states that Chia relinquished day-to-day management from 1 March 2024, while Chia Song Kooi became group chief executive responsible for operations. This is more precise than using an older biography to call Song Kun the continuing operational head. A chairman’s involvement and the chief executive’s daily management are related responsibilities, but the filing explicitly separates them.
Education remains part of the public record
The company biography records an honorary law degree from the University of Hertfordshire in 2008 and an honorary management doctorate from INTI International University in 2019. The awards recognise a business and education career; they should not be mistaken for professional legal qualification or completed doctoral research. His Malaysian EY Entrepreneur of the Year recognition belongs to 2012, as the subsequent country-winner supplement makes clear.
Across these records, Chia’s contribution is the organisation of an agro-food enterprise around family collaboration and connected production activities, followed by the development of a continuing governance structure. The mathematics student, lecturer, trader and chairman belong to the same career, while the qualifications, businesses and offices retain their separate meanings. None requires a personal net-worth estimate or a claim that corporate revenue belonged to him personally.
