Baharuddin Zainal’s beginnings
Baha Zain is the pen name of Baharuddin bin Zainal, born on 22 May 1939 in Hutan Melintang, Perak. His education took him through Sabak Bernam, Teluk Anson and Ipoh before he entered the University of Malaya in 1960, graduating in 1963.
The route connected a rural upbringing with the institutions of a developing national literary culture. His later public identity encompassed more than the writing of poems: he became a critic, editor and participant in organisations concerned with language, books and the position of writers.
Poetry and a wider catalogue
DBP identifies Perempuan dan Bayang-bayang, published in 1974, as his first poetry collection. Its catalogue also records literary-prize recognition for poems, fiction and criticism. The range matters: the pen name appears across genres rather than belonging exclusively to a single celebrated book.
Dari Kertas Catatan Tengah Malam and Tiga Catatan Perjalanan offer further routes into his poetry. Later selected collections gather work from a longer writing career; a modern reissue’s date should not be mistaken for the first publication of every poem it contains. Readers can use the original titles to distinguish collections from criticism and short fiction.
Editing, language and literary institutions
He joined Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka’s research division in 1963 and worked in its dictionary division from 1966. DBP’s author directory records editorial roles involving Dewan Sastera, Dewan Budaya and Dewan Bahasa, and dates his deputy-director-general appointment to 1982.
His organisational work included the writers’ association PENA, whose presidency he held from 2008 to 2011. Editing and literary association work placed him among the people who selected, discussed and circulated writing, as well as those who produced it. The institutional career therefore complements, rather than replaces, the poetry.

The 2013 National Laureate recognition
In May 2013, Baha Zain received Malaysia’s 12th National Laureate recognition. Bernama’s contemporary account, carried by mStar, identified him as a former DBP deputy director-general and discussed his poetry, essays and sustained literary contributions. UiTM’s library record independently lists the award year.
That recognition gives readers a useful landmark, not a claim that his creative career began in 2013. Library collections and publisher records preserve different parts of the record: selected poems, earlier books and critical writing. Together they allow a fuller introduction than an awards list alone.

The directory dates the DBP deputy-director-general appointment to 1982. UiTM’s timeline places 1985–1996 near that title, but DBP assigns those dates to national-award panel service. The ambiguous timeline is not silently turned into a deputy-director-general tenure.
