Indian background and business education

Aloke Lohia is an Indian industrialist whose principal business association is with Thailand-based Indorama Ventures. EPL’s 2025 director notice gives his birth date as 27 November 1958 and nationality as Indian. His inclusion in a Thailand archive reflects where he built the company, not a claim that he holds Thai nationality.

He earned a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Delhi. The World Economic Forum’s contributor profile identifies him as Indorama Ventures’ founder and group chief executive and lists honorary doctorates. Those honorary awards should be distinguished from an earned research doctorate or the commerce degree that formed his academic training.

From wool production to PET

The corporate history traces Indorama Holdings’ wool operations to 1994 and its first Thai PET manufacturing site to 1995. PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, is used in packaging and polyester products. The business increasingly connected materials production with customers using those materials, rather than operating only as a consumer-facing brand.

The company’s February 2010 information memorandum describes expansion through acquisitions as well as improvements to existing plants. It records the purchase of European PET facilities in 2008 and the AlphaPet investment in North America in 2009. Growth involved both purchasing operations and developing production capacity.

An integrated international manufacturer

The memorandum also explains the move into purified terephthalic acid, an upstream input in the polyester chain, through three facilities in 2008. That helps explain vertical integration: control of more than one stage linking industrial feedstocks, resin and downstream products. The 2010 corporate restructuring and listing belong to this industrial story, rather than the first appearance of every underlying factory.

Indorama Ventures must also be distinguished from other companies bearing the Indorama name and associated with the wider Lohia family. Lohia’s role at this listed group is not interchangeable with another relative’s leadership of a separate corporate entity.

Recycling and later board responsibilities

The company history records entry into recycling through the 2011 acquisition of Wellman International in Ireland. Recycling became another part of the materials chain, alongside primary resin and fibre production. Announced future recycling targets are not the same as independently verified annual output.

A separate July 2025 EPL notice records Lohia’s appointment as an additional non-executive, non-independent director from May 27 and seeks shareholder approval through a postal ballot. That is a dated governance record, not proof by itself of every subsequent voting outcome. It extends the biography beyond a simple list of company sizes or estimated wealth.
