The short answer
Perikatan Nasional emerged from the 2020 collapse of the PH government, governed under Muhyiddin Yassin and won 74 aligned seats at GE15 before becoming the principal opposition. In 2026 Ahmad Samsuri took over as chair, PAS ended cooperation with Bersatu, and a disputed membership process led RoS to suspend coalition activities without cancelling its registration.
Changing structure
GE15 alignment versus the July 2026 state campaign
The comparison shows why party descriptions need a date. It does not claim that a single state-election line-up is a complete legal register of national membership.
| Snapshot | Principal parties | Leadership | Political outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| GE15 · November 2022 | Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan and partners | Muhyiddin Yassin chaired PN | 74 aligned seats; principal opposition |

How was Perikatan Nasional formed?
PN grew from the parliamentary realignment that ended the first PH government in February 2020. Bersatu withdrew from PH, a group of PKR MPs changed alignment and Muhyiddin Yassin was appointed prime minister after royal consultations.
Muhyiddin’s administration drew support from Bersatu, PAS, BN parties, GPS and other MPs. Perikatan Nasional then became the organising label for Bersatu, PAS and partners, with Muhyiddin as chair.
The coalition was therefore born in government rather than through a general-election victory. Its legitimacy and majority were debated throughout the pandemic-era administration, and Muhyiddin resigned in August 2021 after support fell away.
What did PN achieve at GE15?
GE15 was PN’s first nationwide general-election test. The official result listed PN on 52 seats and PAS on 22, producing a commonly used aligned total of 74.
The coalition displaced BN across many northern and eastern Malay-majority constituencies. PAS’s organisation and Bersatu’s national leadership combined with dissatisfaction toward both BN and PH.
No coalition won a majority. PN attempted to form a government, but BN declined to support it and a broader alignment backed Anwar Ibrahim. PN consequently became the largest opposition grouping.
Why is the 2026 PN membership picture complicated?
The coalition’s GE15 identity was built principally around Bersatu and PAS, with Gerakan and smaller partners. That historical description remains correct for the 2022 election but does not fully describe developments four years later.
PAS formally ended political cooperation with Bersatu on 8 June 2026. In the July Negeri Sembilan campaign, PN said its candidates represented PAS, Gerakan, Wawasan and MIPP, while Bersatu chose to contest separately after not joining the coalition’s seat negotiations.
In August, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said Bersatu had automatically left PN. Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali disputed that claim and argued that only the presidential council could determine membership under the coalition constitution.
After Bersatu complained, the Registrar of Societies issued PN a show-cause notice on 22 September and suspended all coalition activities the next day. RoS expressly said the notice was not a cancellation of registration. The legal and organisational process was unresolved at the 4 October review date.
Who leads Perikatan Nasional in 2026?
Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar became PN chairman on 22 February 2026 after Muhyiddin’s resignation took effect at the start of the year. Samsuri is a PAS vice-president and the menteri besar of Terengganu.
In May he also became leader of the opposition in the Dewan Rakyat. The appointments shifted the coalition’s public centre of gravity from Bersatu toward a PAS leader.
Muhyiddin remains historically central as PN’s founding chair and first prime minister. Leadership chronology should distinguish his role in 2020–2025 from Samsuri’s chairmanship in 2026.
What parties campaigned under PN in Negeri Sembilan?
For the July 2026 Negeri Sembilan election, PN publicly described a slate involving PAS, Gerakan, Wawasan and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party. Wawasan had recently been admitted after changing its name from Parti Cinta Malaysia.
Bersatu contested separately, illustrating how an election line-up can differ from a coalition’s earlier national structure. It should not be retroactively projected onto GE15 or automatically assumed to apply in every state.
State contests are useful evidence of practical cooperation, but registration records and formal coalition decisions remain necessary before treating a campaign arrangement as a permanent nationwide membership map.
What does PN represent in Malaysian politics?
PN became the principal opposition to Anwar’s unity government and built its strongest support across many Malay-majority areas. PAS contributes a long-established Islamic party network, while the coalition has also sought multi-ethnic and Indian representation through smaller partners.
Its 2022 campaign stressed clean government, stability and Malay-Muslim representation. Critics and analysts debate how much its growth reflects ideological change, protest voting, organisational strength or the mechanics of multi-cornered contests.
The safest evidence-based conclusion is electoral: PN-aligned parties won 74 GE15 seats and formed the main parliamentary opposition. Claims about a single motive for every voter go beyond what the result itself can prove.
