The short answer
What exactly began in 1972: a brand, a shoe counter or the international ALDO Group familiar today? The evidence points first to a small footwear concession in Montréal. Later shops, multiple retail brands, wholesaling and franchising developed from that beginning. Following these stages explains the founding more clearly than reading today’s global organization back into its first year.

The founder brought research experience to a familiar trade
Footwear was part of Bensadoun’s family background, but his route into his own business included university and marketing research. McGill’s institutional biography describes studies in France and at Cornell before economics at McGill. A project for a regional shoe chain brought that training into contact with retail operations.
This background matters because the founding was neither the invention of footwear nor simply an inherited store renamed after its new owner. Family experience, formal education and a job involving another retailer preceded the new venture. They help explain why customer preferences and product selection became recurring themes in his later accounts of retailing.
A concession was the first selling format
Federation CJA’s heritage profile places Bensadoun in a corner of a Le Château store in 1972, selling clogs. The museum’s history locates the early business on downtown Montréal’s Sainte-Catherine Street. Together these records place the origin within an established shopping environment, rather than an already independent international chain.
A concession means the footwear operation occupied selling space inside another retailer. That distinction explains why sources can date ALDO’s beginning to 1972 while describing freestanding stores as a later development. It also preserves Le Château’s role in the setting of the venture without implying that Bensadoun founded that clothing company.
The clog connects an early product with a developing brand
The current ALDO brand account identifies its first shoe as the Frida clog, describing influences from Swedish and Japanese designs. A retained corporate archive separately labels a 1973 Italian-clog advertisement as an early bestseller. These are retrospective company descriptions, useful for understanding how the brand presents its beginnings rather than for proving every promotional claim.
The commercial model later extended well beyond that product. The museum distinguishes the ALDO, Spring and GLOBO retail concepts and a wholesale division supplying design and production services to other brands. Montréal-based design and overseas production formed part of that organization. Those later activities should not be assumed to have existed in full at the concession’s opening.
A standalone opening was a separate, imperfectly recorded milestone
Accounts agree that freestanding shops followed the original concession, but the precise first-store year is inconsistent. The ALDO Thailand history and selected Bloomberg passages republished by The Business of Fashion give 1978. A short McGill linked-news summary published in 2017 instead gives 1987. This guide records that disagreement rather than silently treating both years as compatible.
The Bloomberg account attributes to Bensadoun’s longtime lawyer the recollection that an additional mortgage on his home helped fund the business. It also describes expansion across Canada before overseas growth. The funding recollection belongs to an attributed retrospective account; it does not establish a complete first-year balance sheet or justify a claim that the founder had no assistance.
International stores and franchises came decades after founding
Company and museum histories date the first US shop to 1993, with the museum identifying Boston. The first Israeli franchise followed in 1995. A directly operated store and a franchise are distinct ways to expand: the latter introduces a local operating partner into the brand’s reach. Neither event changes the 1972 Montréal origin.
The distinction also helps readers interpret later scale claims. A tally of all branded points of sale is not automatically a count of stores owned and operated by the group. ALDO’s later restructuring further shows that longevity and international recognition do not remove financial pressures. Its founding history establishes a sequence of business development, while the founder’s biography examines succession, philanthropy and those subsequent costs.

Common questions
- Was ALDO founded in 1972 or 1978?
- The 1972 date refers to the concession-based beginning. The regional company history and Bloomberg account associate 1978 with a later freestanding shop, although one McGill summary gives 1987 for that milestone.
- Was the first ALDO business inside Le Château?
- Yes. The heritage account explicitly describes a small footwear-selling space inside Le Château in Montréal.
- When did ALDO expand outside Canada?
- The reviewed company and museum histories identify the first US shop in 1993 and the first franchise in Israel in 1995.
- Are franchises the same as company-owned stores?
- No. They extend a brand through different operating arrangements. Counts of shops, franchises and points of sale need their original scope and date.
