The founder was a different person from Sir William
Alfred William Gallagher was born in Hamilton on 17 May 1911. Known as Willie and later Bill, he grew up around dairy farming and worked on the family farm after leaving school. He is the founder discussed here, rather than his son Bill junior, later Sir William Gallagher. Company histories often refer to both generations, making the distinction essential. The father’s experiments, the sons’ later responsibilities and the present company are related parts of a history, but they are not interchangeable. A shared name should not transfer one generation’s achievements or honours to another.
Farm work supplied problems worth solving
Gallagher’s public record includes mechanical projects beyond fencing. The Business Hall of Fame describes a rotary engine used to pump water to a cowshed, modifications to a family vehicle and an interest in improving farm tasks. Its account also credits his brother Henry in the familiar story of a horse brushing against a car and encountering an electrical shock. The story is best read as part of the company’s remembered origins. It explains a practical observation without proving that no earlier inventor elsewhere had investigated electrified fencing. Establishing worldwide priority would require a different body of evidence.
An early fence was not the same as incorporation
The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography places Gallagher’s first fence at about 1937; the company uses 1938 as its business origin. These dates refer to development and commercial beginnings, while Gallagher Engineering became a limited-liability company in 1963. The distinction allows a workshop enterprise to have a history before incorporation. Electrical rules also shaped the product: he developed a battery-powered design when mains use was prohibited, and later designs followed a change in regulation. This is a historical account of product development, rather than instructions for building or operating an electric fence.
The company’s memory emphasises customers and continuity
Gallagher Animal Management presents its business as a family enterprise shaped by practical customer needs. Its own origin account explicitly describes Bill Senior as the founder and Bill Junior as the person who later took the business into wider markets. This helps place succession within the story rather than attributing every subsequent expansion to the original inventor. It remains a corporate account, with an interest in celebrating continuity. Its descriptions of today’s connected products explain how the company presents its range; they should not be read as products personally designed by the man who died in 1990.

Engineering also extended beyond the farm
Boats and boating occupied another part of Gallagher’s working life. The Hall of Fame records boatbuilding, Boys’ Brigade hospitality trips and church-related voyages in the Pacific. These activities broaden a biography otherwise reduced to a single useful device. They connect practical engineering with leisure, service and the communities in which he participated. The award account celebrates those activities, but does not provide an independent measure of their effects on everyone involved. Describing the work and its purpose gives a more precise picture than treating every project as an equally successful commercial venture.

The lifetime and the later business must stay separate
Gallagher died in Hamilton on 8 August 1990. He was subsequently inducted into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame in 2012. The award recognises an earlier lifetime rather than a new role in the company. His lasting business importance lies in helping turn an everyday farming problem into a repeatable product and an enterprise that could outlast him. That development required more than an inventive moment: manufacture, selling, regulation and succession all mattered. Reading the founder alongside the next generation makes those contributions visible and avoids making a modern company’s entire scale a personal achievement.
