Telecommunications career: 1994–

Shameel Joosub

Shameel Joosub advanced from accounting and handset distribution to leading Vodacom Group. His career connects South African mobile services with cross-border investment, including Safaricom. It also includes corporate accountability in the long Please Call Me compensation dispute. Laudium and accounting preceded telecommunications leadership

Joosub grew up in Laudium, southwest of central Pretoria. In the account reported by MyBroadband, small-scale trading began in childhood and accounting studies followed while he worked. These recollections explain an interest in commerce, but childhood anecdotes should not stand in for the later institutional career that made him publicly significant.

The reviewed profiles disagree on his age, so an exact birthday and birth year are withheld. His qualifications are clearer: an honours accounting degree from Unisa and an MBA from the University of Southern Queensland. Harvard’s Advanced Management Programme is executive education, not a Harvard degree; the doctorate received from the Central University of Technology in 2023 was honorary.

Accounting, handsets and service provision were different responsibilities

He joined Vodacom in 1994 as a senior accountant. A contemporary Finweek interview traces subsequent work through procurement, purchasing, handset distribution and service provision. Those changes exposed him to commercial operations beyond financial reporting. They do not make him the founder of the Vodacom group, which already existed when he joined.

The 2005 annual report records his earlier leadership of Vodacom Equipment and his September 2000 appointment to the service-provider business. He later became managing director of Vodacom South Africa. Distinguishing the equipment distributor, service provider and national operator avoids turning a sequence of operating-company appointments into one uninterrupted group chief-executive role.

A Spanish assignment led to the group appointment in 2012

Joosub was chief executive of Vodafone Spain before returning to lead Vodacom Group. The board announced his appointment on 5 July 2012, effective 1 September, succeeding Pieter Uys. The announcement and effective date answer different questions; neither should be substituted for his earlier South African operating role.

As group CEO, he works with authority delegated by the board. Vodafone’s biography also records his appointment to its executive committee in April 2020 and broader African responsibilities. These are corporate offices within a shareholder-controlled group, not evidence of personal ownership. Local chief executives and specialist teams retain responsibilities within the businesses he oversees.

Safaricom expansion changed the group’s exposure and later its control

During his tenure, Vodacom completed the 2017 acquisition of an indirect 34.94% Safaricom interest from Vodafone. It issued new Vodacom shares in exchange. The investment connected the group more closely to Kenya’s mobile and financial-services business; it was not Joosub personally buying Safaricom or founding M-Pesa.

A different transaction completed on 30 June 2026 added an effective 20%, taking Vodacom’s holding to approximately 55% and enabling consolidation. The July trading update still identified Joosub as group CEO. The progression from associate investment to control belongs to two dated transactions, not a retrospective claim that the 2017 deal already delivered majority ownership.

Please Call Me placed executive decision-making under scrutiny

The compensation dispute with former employee Nkosana Makate became a major accountability issue during Joosub’s leadership. His earlier R47 million determination was contested, and litigation continued for years. The controversy concerned remuneration for the Please Call Me idea and the company’s obligations; it should not be converted into an unsupported allegation of personal criminal guilt.

Vodacom’s board approved an out-of-court settlement on 4 November 2025, announced the next day. Independent reporting recorded that its amount was confidential and that a one-off cost affected the South African business’s interim earnings. Public estimates are not the settlement figure. The resolution is part of his leadership record without making the company’s liabilities his personal property or erasing Makate’s claim.
