From household-goods trading to the OSIM name
Ron Sim is a Singaporean entrepreneur born in 1958. A Quantex analyst profile describes his upbringing in modest circumstances in Singapore. His later career became associated with massage chairs, but the business began with a broader range of everyday household products rather than a fully formed international wellness brand.
V3 Group’s corporate history dates that beginning to R. Sim Trading in 1979. The OSIM brand history places the launch of the OSIM name in 1989: the opening letter represented the globe, joined to the founder’s surname. The two dates describe different stages, from trading goods to developing a recognisable name for products sold across markets.
Building an overseas retail business
OSIM’s international development involved adapting its retail approach rather than relying on Singapore alone. Enterprise Singapore’s account of the business describes expansion after the 1985 recession, when nearby markets offered cultural and language connections. The company’s chronology records Hong Kong in 1986, Taiwan in 1987, Malaysia in 1990 and China in 1994.
Its later strategy included local partners, product demonstrations and collaborations intended to introduce the brand to different audiences. The Enterprise Singapore article, originally published in The Straits Times in September 2023, also explains how American mall roadshows tested locations before a permanent store was opened. These were practical decisions about finding customers, not proof that a strategy worked equally well everywhere.
Brookstone and the limits of expansion
A significant setback came from the United States. In 2005, OSIM participated with Temasek and J.W. Childs Associates in the acquisition of Brookstone. The deal offered access to an established retail network, but Enterprise Singapore’s retrospective describes a chain that struggled to adjust to online shopping and an investment that required a substantial write-off.
That experience complicates a simple success story. Access to another company’s shops did not remove the risks of changing customer habits or choosing the right partners. OSIM subsequently experimented with its own American stores and smaller-scale market testing. The account concerns the company’s expansion decisions; it does not establish Sim’s personal losses or present-day wealth.

From a listed OSIM to V3 Group
OSIM’s listing in 2000 and privatisation in 2016 preceded V3 Group’s incorporation in 2017. V3 brought a wider brand portfolio under a group structure, with Sim as founder and executive chairman. This role should not be confused with the chief executive position at OSIM, which the group’s management page identifies separately under Mindy Wang.
On 4 December 2018, KKR announced an investment of up to S$500 million in V3, with an indicated enterprise value of approximately S$1.7 billion. Those figures referred to a corporate transaction, not Sim’s personal net worth. V3’s own timeline places a KKR shareholder milestone in 2019. Earlier recognition came through EY’s Singapore Entrepreneur Of The Year award in 2003, a distinct achievement from later financing.
