From Sekinchan to engineering in Taiwan
Pua Khein-Seng was born in 1974 and grew up in Sekinchan, Selangor. After attending Pin Hwa High School in Klang, he moved to Taiwan for engineering studies at National Chiao Tung University. Reporting on his career describes the financial pressures of studying abroad and his decision to build a technical career there.
The university, now part of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, identifies him as an alumnus of electrical and control engineering. His story is therefore both Malaysian and Taiwanese: his origins and schooling were in Malaysia, while the university and industrial environment in Taiwan helped shape the company he later co-founded.
Phison and the single-chip USB distinction
Pua co-founded Phison Electronics with four partners in 2000. The company’s records give 8 November as its founding date, and its corporate history describes an early focus on single-chip USB flash-drive controller technology. Integrating control functions into a chip was a specific engineering contribution within the development of portable flash storage.
The popular description of Pua as the father of the pen drive can obscure that distinction. This biography credits his work on single-chip USB technology rather than declaring him the sole inventor of every USB flash drive or the USB interface. Phison subsequently expanded into NAND controllers and storage solutions used in solid-state drives and other products.
Storage engineering and university collaboration
Phison’s business extends beyond the familiar removable drive. Its corporate history describes work across controller design and storage solutions, including an enterprise SSD research laboratory opened in Colorado in 2020. The company supplies technology within a wider storage industry rather than manufacturing every component of every finished drive under its customers’ brands.
Pua also maintained links with his former university. In September 2024 NYCU reported Phison’s donation of AI training solutions intended to improve the use of existing computing equipment. The university’s separate internship account connects storage engineering with student training. Together, these initiatives show a business relationship with academia extending beyond Pua’s own years as a student.
Financial-report litigation and leadership roles
His career also includes litigation arising from Phison’s 2016 financial-report case. In an August 2022 statement, the company reported that Taiwan’s High Court imposed five years’ probation on Pua, with treasury contributions and legal education requirements, while he continued as CEO. Technical achievements do not remove this governance record from his biography.
The 2025 financial statements separately describe civil proceedings: a director-removal ruling dated 15 January 2025 and an appeal, alongside an investor class action with its own procedural history. They also record his November 2021 resignation as a director. Those disclosures concern different proceedings and reporting dates; neither a directorship’s end nor an interim civil ruling should be misreported as the end of his CEO role or a final resolution of every case.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions about Pua Khein-Seng
- Who is Pua Khein-Seng?
- He is a Malaysian engineer from Sekinchan who co-founded Taiwan-based Phison Electronics and is known for single-chip USB flash-control technology and NAND storage products.
- Did Pua Khein-Seng invent the USB flash drive?
- His documented contribution concerns single-chip USB flash-drive controller technology. Calling him the sole inventor of all USB flash drives or of the USB interface would overstate that contribution.
- When was Phison founded?
- Phison’s investor-relations fundamentals give 8 November 2000. Pua co-founded the company with four partners.
- Did Pua’s directorship end his CEO role?
- These are distinct roles. Phison disclosed a November 2021 director resignation and separately stated in August 2022 that he would continue as CEO after the financial-report case judgment.
