Jakarta, advertising and an early dramatic lead
Julie Estelle was born in Jakarta on 4 January 1989, according to Indonesian Film Center. A career interview also identifies her by the fuller name Julie Estelle Gasnier. Her route into acting began through advertising and romantic drama, rather than through an established career in martial-arts competition.
Recalling Alexandria in a Tatler interview, she described entering the 2005 film without prior acting experience and preparing through workshops and short classes. A 2008 Jakarta Post profile identifies it as her first leading film role. She remembered initially struggling to answer even a straightforward press question about her character. Learning the public side of a film career accompanied the work of learning to perform.
Kuntilanak established a different screen identity
Kuntilanak, released in 2006 and also known as The Chanting, made horror an important part of Estelle’s early career. Its sequels followed in 2007 and 2008. The films were directed by Rizal Mantovani, while Ody C. Harahap directed Alexandria and the 2007 drama Selamanya. These collaborations gave her different kinds of roles before the action-film breakthrough.
Her filmography subsequently included Rumah Dara, known internationally as Macabre. Yet horror was one strand rather than a complete definition of her work. In the Jakarta Post interview she welcomed opportunities to explore characters with supportive directors; later, she told Tatler that audiences’ strongest memories of action and horror could obscure her experience in romance, drama and comedy.
Hammer Girl was built through training
Gareth Evans’s The Raid 2, released in 2014, cast Estelle as Hammer Girl. She explained that she had no martial-arts background when the opportunity arose. An audition and extensive physical preparation therefore mattered as much as the finished character’s distinctive weapons and appearance.
In her contemporary interview with The Diva Review, Estelle described stamina work, learning choreography and building trust with her screen opponents. Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian formed part of the training team, while Very Tri Yulisman, who played Baseball Bat Man, worked closely with her. She described the two fictional characters as siblings. Their convincing partnership came from preparation; it did not mean the actors were related or that she had entered the project as a professional fighter.
Letters from Prague kept drama central
Estelle continued to work outside action. Indonesian Film Center lists her in Filosofi Kopi in 2015 and Surat dari Praha in 2016. The latter, released internationally as Letters from Prague, gives her the role of Larasati, a woman required to deliver her mother’s letters to a former fiancé in Prague.
The Czech Film Commission describes the drama as a reconciliation between generations, connecting a family’s hidden history with Indonesia’s past. Its record distinguishes filming in Prague in 2015 from the film’s 2016 premiere year. The role asks viewers to follow inheritance, memory and strained relationships: a different dramatic purpose from the immediate physical threat associated with Hammer Girl.
Rika and the Operator were new action roles
Headshot in 2016 cast Estelle as Rika under directors Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel. Discussing a beach fight with Uwais at a press screening, she acknowledged the challenge of performing action without his foundational martial-arts background. Their comments describe a new production problem, not another appearance by Hammer Girl.
In 2018 she played the Operator in The Night Comes for Us, a separate film whose cast also includes Uwais and Joe Taslim. A contemporaneous report about her international representation quoted her saying that she had not planned a specific route to an overseas career, but tried to do her best with each role. The film strengthened her action-film profile while leaving room for Indonesian projects and other kinds of acting.
A return to a story about acting itself
Jatuh Cinta Seperti di Film-Film, from 2023, brought Estelle into Yandy Laurens’s film-about-filmmaking ensemble. FilmIndonesia’s full credits list her character as Julie Estelle, while Nirina Zubir is credited as Hana. That distinction matters when describing her participation rather than assigning her the other actor’s central role.
Discussing the project, Estelle said the screenplay’s appeal persuaded her to take part. This returns to a consistent theme in her interviews: interest in a role’s emotional demands as well as its genre. Her biography is consequently broader than a sequence of action opponents. Alexandria, Kuntilanak, Letters from Prague and the later ensemble work place the international fighting roles within a longer Indonesian acting career.
