From mathematics to finance
Jose Isidro Camacho was born in Balanga, Bataan, on 20 July 1955. He completed an AB in Mathematics at De La Salle University in 1975, graduating cum laude. His undergraduate training preceded a professional career that would encompass international banking, economic administration and corporate board leadership.
After a brief period at Banco Filipino, he pursued graduate study in the United States. He earned his Harvard MBA in 1979 with a concentration in finance. De La Salle’s alumni association later recognised him with its 2013 achievement award in banking and finance, citing his work in both government and financial institutions.
An international banking career
Camacho worked for Bankers Trust for more than twenty years, with assignments in New York, Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Singapore. He became a managing director in 1990 and a partner in 1996. His responsibilities included investment banking in Southeast Asia, giving his career a regional as well as Philippine focus.
He subsequently held senior positions at Deutsche Bank, including managing director and chief country officer for the Philippines. Following his government service, he joined Credit Suisse in March 2005. He served as Singapore chief executive during 2007–2016 and as vice-chairman for Asia Pacific before retiring from the bank in 2022.
Energy and finance responsibilities
In 2001, Camacho moved into President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s administration, serving initially as energy secretary and subsequently as finance secretary. His energy tenure coincided with passage of power-sector reform legislation. The change of portfolio then placed him at the centre of the government’s fiscal and financial administration.
As finance secretary until November 2003, he led the economic team and supervised the fiscal and financial sectors. His public appointments also involved chairing government financial and energy corporations, including Land Bank and the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation. He returned to international banking after this period of cabinet service.
Corporate oversight and arts education
Camacho’s later appointments extend beyond banking. He chairs the University of the Arts Singapore, whose initial annual report records his appointment on 24 August 2022. The university’s current leadership biography also describes previous service on the boards of Singapore’s National Gallery and National Heritage Board.
Nickel Asia first elected him to its board on 7 June 2024 and identifies him as its non-executive chairman. He also chairs the board’s finance and corporate-governance committees. The company assigns him leadership of board strategy and accountability, while its president and chief executive leads management and implementation of business plans.
