An accountant’s view of business software

Hamish Edwards entered software entrepreneurship through accounting practice. Xero’s May 2007 offer document records an earned Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Otago, majoring in marketing and accounting, and identifies him as a chartered accountant who then held a practising certificate. These are dated qualifications and professional descriptions. A 2024 interview says he was no longer a practising accountant. The reviewed records do not establish his birth date or birthplace. His contribution can be described through documented work without supplying an unsupported age, childhood narrative or present professional registration.

Practice experience supplied a different kind of expertise

In his 2024 Accountex interview, Edwards recalled working in his father’s accounting practice after leaving the Army. He described repositioning the firm around virtual chief financial officer services and later selling it to Deloitte. This is his retrospective account, rather than a transaction record independently establishing sale terms or dates. It nevertheless explains his stated interest in helping owners understand and manage their businesses. He argued that accountants needed to attend to their own leadership, strategy, staff training and technology decisions as well as their clients’ financial affairs.

Co-founding Xero involved finance and an operating team

Edwards co-founded Xero with Rod Drury in 2006. The contemporary offer document assigned Edwards responsibility for finance, administration and human resources as chief financial officer. It named Drury as chief executive and set out a wider management and board structure. Xero’s May 2007 announcement described a product already available in limited release, while setting out plans to expand beyond New Zealand. The company combined a service for small-business owners with relationships with accountants. Edwards’s practice background therefore formed part of a team’s attempt to turn familiar accounting problems into an online service.

The UK appointment was a specific early responsibility

The annual report for the year ended 31 March 2008 identifies Edwards as UK managing director, co-founder and an executive director. Its directory distinguishes his job from Drury’s chief executive role and Alastair Grigg’s operational responsibilities. The report says Xero established a UK presence in late 2007. This matters because entering another market required local relationships and customer support alongside software development. It also gives a firm date to his title: a role printed in a 2008 directory should not be carried forward as a current appointment without later evidence.

Public reporting adds accountability to a founder story

Xero’s early listed-company record includes financial statements, directors’ remuneration and related-party disclosures, as well as management’s account of progress. It records transactions with Openside CA Limited, in which Edwards was a director and voting shareholder, covering office space and accounting services. These disclosed relationships help explain how the early business was organised; their appearance in the report does not by itself imply wrongdoing. Reading the disclosures alongside the founders’ narrative keeps company resources, individual roles and the product’s development in view together. A public company’s history includes these governance records as well as its milestones.

Firmcheck continued the focus on accounting firms

As checked in October 2026, Firmcheck’s own company page describes Edwards as its leader, a Xero co-founder and a former practising accountant. It presents the business as software intended to simplify anti-money-laundering work for UK accounting firms. This establishes how the company describes its purpose and leadership, rather than an independent audit of its compliance performance. Edwards’s 2024 interview similarly stressed listening to accountants and understanding how their firms operate. His later work shows a continuing interest in professional workflows, with the specific software problem moving from general accounting to managing compliance tasks.
