A band provided an early professional setting
Glenn Fredly Deviano Latuihamallo was born in Jakarta on 30 September 1975. His official history dates his entry into Funk Section to 1995. Working as the band’s vocalist gave him a professional setting before he pursued a solo recording career. The move involved a shift in how listeners encountered him: a distinctive singer within a group became the central identity on an album. His later collaborations would continue to place that voice beside other musicians rather than treating solo success as a reason to stop working with them.
The solo albums developed a recognisable repertoire
His first solo album, Glenn, appeared in 1998 with Sony Music Indonesia and producer Aminoto Kosin. Kembali followed in 2000 and Selamat Pagi, Dunia! in 2003. The latter included “Januari” and “Sekali Ini Saja”, songs closely associated with his public reputation. The official discography also records the Cinta Silver soundtrack in 2005. These releases established several contexts for the singer: the solo album, the individual song and music made in relation to a film. They remain separate projects within a developing career.
The catalogue continued beyond the first major successes
The official album list traces later releases including Happy Sunday, Lovevolution and Luka, Cinta & Merdeka. Romansa Ke Masa Depan arrived in 2019. This later catalogue accompanied collaborations rather than replacing them. Tulus’s own career account identifies “Adu Rayu” as a 2019 project with Yovie Widianto and Glenn. It brought three recognisable musical identities into a shared recording. The collaboration forms a useful connection between Glenn’s own repertoire and the wider network of Indonesian songwriters and singers with whom he worked.
Eastern Indonesia became an explicit public concern
Glenn used public musical occasions to draw attention to eastern Indonesia. His official history describes the Cinta Beta anniversary concert in 2012 as one such occasion. Ambon also became a sustained focus of his activity. These commitments placed regional cultural life within a national recording career, rather than leaving it as background to his biography. When Ambon’s mayor commemorated him in 2021, the city’s account specifically recognised his contribution to the campaign surrounding its UNESCO City of Music designation.
Music organising extended beyond a concert programme
The official history records the Indonesian Music Conference in Ambon in 2018, involving Ruma Beta Foundation, Dyandra Promosindo and Koalisi Seni. This kind of activity addressed the environment in which musicians worked, alongside the production of songs. Glenn’s public career therefore included convening and advocacy as well as performance. The civic tribute’s emphasis on a continuing music ecosystem helps explain why local institutions remembered him for more than a sequence of successful records. His contribution was made through relationships and projects that could continue after one event ended.
His death prompted a public reckoning with that wider work
Glenn died on 8 April 2020, aged 44. ANTARA’s contemporaneous report records confirmation from fellow musician Tompi. A year later, Ambon’s mayor spoke at a commemoration in Jakarta and urged younger musicians to continue developing the music community. Those two moments mark different things: the loss of a singer and the effort to sustain the work he supported. His legacy includes the recordings, but also a model of a popular musician investing time and public attention in collaborators, regional culture and the future conditions of musical life.
