Turning agricultural research into a working business
Vanessa Teo built Agrome IQ around a question that sits at the centre of Brunei’s diversification agenda: how can a small, import-dependent country make local farming more productive and attractive to a new generation? An official Majlis Ilmu programme identifies her as the company’s founder and chief executive and traces the idea to her doctoral work in agricultural systems modelling at Universiti Brunei Darussalam with IBM. Research exposed the practical constraints facing farmers and suggested that better information could be turned into a service rather than left inside a thesis.
Agrome IQ emerged around 2016–2017 as an agricultural education and technology company. Its tools combined training with a mobile platform through which growers could record activity, monitor crops and make more informed decisions. That mixture matters. Software by itself could not solve gaps in farm practice, while workshops without continuing data would be difficult to scale. Teo’s model treated skills, farm records and technology as parts of the same production system.
The company gained early regional recognition at the 2017 ASEAN Rice Bowl Startup Awards in Brunei. Government reporting recorded Agrome IQ as Startup of the Year and Teo as Founder of the Year. By 2018 a Pelita Brunei profile described roughly 400 clients and plans to move beyond the domestic market. Those figures were a snapshot rather than a permanent measure of company size, but they show that the project had moved from demonstration to an operating relationship with growers and learners.
Connecting farmers to markets and finance
The COVID-19 disruption tested that model. Restrictions reduced access to the markets on which small growers depended, creating the risk that fresh produce would be wasted even while households still needed food. Agrome IQ responded by launching Agrome Market in April 2020. Pelita Brunei and the BIMP-EAGA cooperation programme described an online marketplace designed to let farmers sell directly to consumers while the company coordinated marketing and delivery. The service began with a small group of growers and rapidly sold hundreds of kilograms of local produce.
Later that year Agrome Market added a physical retail location in Beribi. The site was also intended as a training venue for growers working toward Brunei Good Agricultural Practice certification. Moving between app, marketplace, shop and classroom illustrates the practical character of Teo’s entrepreneurship: the goal was not simply to build a digital interface, but to reduce several points of friction between cultivation and a completed sale.
Her regional work widened the same logic from markets to finance. The published outcome of the Fifth ASEAN Inclusive Business Summit identifies Teo as Agrome IQ chief executive and records a model for creating farmer credit ratings and connecting smallholders to banks. That work reframed farm data as more than a management tool; a credible record could also help lenders understand businesses that conventional finance often treats as too small or informal. Teo’s significance therefore lies in building infrastructure between sectors—research and enterprise, farmers and consumers, and smallholders and financial institutions—rather than in presenting technology as an end in itself.
