Economics and government before the wars
Son Sann trained in economics in France and served in Cambodia’s administration during the transition from protectorate to independence. He held cabinet posts, led the National Bank and became prime minister in 1967.
His work belonged to Sihanouk’s attempt to build sovereign economic institutions, but Cambodia’s widening civil conflict and the 1970 coup displaced that political order.
Resistance, peace and parliament
After the Khmer Rouge period and Vietnamese intervention, Son Sann founded the Khmer People’s National Liberation Front. It became the principal non-communist faction in the resistance coalition, even as cooperation among former enemies created deep moral and strategic tension.
Son Sann joined the negotiations culminating in the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements. He returned to electoral politics, led the Buddhist Liberal Democratic Party and briefly presided over the National Assembly after the 1993 election.
